In America, they are working to equip their IFVs with the 40 mm and futuristic 50 mm chain guns that will fire multipurpose rounds that will have anti armor, anti personnel anti material uses. So, the 120 mm may not be an actual downgrade, just depends if the ammo it fires is effective in the battlefield or not.

I wonder if India can develop its own SPAD system in a timely manner. No such system will be able to stop all threats, but you have to start somewhere. Using a 120mm gun for the FMBT doesn't make sense to me. The vast majority of Indias current tanks and ammo stocks are 125mm. NATO may be going to a 130mm gun, and India is downgrading?

All Indian Army Armored and Mechanized Units must be equipped with the SPAD-GMS. While the variant for air-defence of armored columns can be based on the Arjun Mk1 chassis, the variant for air-defence of mechanized columns must be based on the chassis of BMP-2 or FICV (not Zorawar Light Tank).
