Reality Check: Ford Adaptive Steering

Ford is aiming to put gear motors in your steering wheel to make driving more fun. Is this really a good idea? Excerpt from TDTV Auto News Sunday episode, June 1, 2014.

Oh yes something will happen . I am already having issues with this system. The wheel be off center by as much as 120 degrees after you make a turn, and really tough to muscle the wheel. Glad this is a lease. Do a Google search, and see how many are having issues with this. Dealership acts like you are the only one with this issue...

I imagine if the gears wear down it will just steer like normal, the adaptive steering is designed to kick in at higher speeds, it simply won't kick in, so the vehicle will just drive like it does without it engaged (like every car now). But hey, wtfdik

I understand your concerns about not having a physical connection between you and the wheels anymore, but what has to be understood in this scenario is that firstly, these systems are incredibly well engineered and tested, to the point where reliability is very high, and secondly, human error is still the number one cause of accidents and fatalities in traffic. To put it bluntly, while this might create the issue of grandma losing control of her steering and barreling into a school bus, it solves the issue of grandma sneezing on the highway and swerving into said school bus.

I now, that's why i don't fly !! Ha-ha. I Think it sounds a bit scary anyway.Steering without any mechanical Connection to the steeringwheels !!

I have it in my 2019 superduty. Hate it. hard to steer on the road. Like manual steering really.

Absolutely nothing will happen if it fails you will still have 100% of steering... I have this on my truck and you can turn it on or off as you desire... smh 🤦🏻‍♂️...
