▶️ A major fire ripped through a historic Japanese castle on the southern island of Okinawa, Thursday, October 31, spreading throughout the World Heritage site's complex, local authorities said.
👉 Shuri Castle is a key part of a complex dating back to the Ryukyu Kingdom, and is believed to have been in use from around the 1400s. The current structure is a reconstruction based on original plans and photos of the old castle.
The blaze started before 3:00 am Thursday morning. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
The castle is also a symbol of Okinawa's struggle and effort to recover from World War II. Shuri Castle burned down in 1945 during the Battle of Okinawa near the war's end, in which about 200,000 lives were lost on the island, many of them civilians. (AFP/AP)

Such a shame, Japanese woodworkers spent years building those beautiful buildings with some of the most advanced joinery the world has ever seen. I do hope Japan brings the top woodworkers from around Japan to rebuild it, the exact same way it was built.

Regarding the castle: I think it was totally destroyed in WWII. It is/was a rebuilt replica which can be built again.
