I suggest if you're going to continue sharpening straight razors that you get a few tips from the shaving forums.
Don't press down on the blade. It's thin and that pressure will distort the blade. The weight of the blade resting on the spine and edge are all it should be.
The strip shouldn't be that rough. Most are 2 part with canvas (fire hose) and smooth leather like bridle.
Been a few years since I sharpened mine..I use Feather brand with disposable blades instead.
