Asha ~ Maranatha

This is a spiritual chant inspired by Paul's epistle to the Corinthians 1:16-22, at the end of which he says: "Maranatha"... "Come, Lord." The words uttered were originally Aramaic, but over time a Greek linguistic influence conflated the two words into one.

Some commentators claim that what was meant was: "The Lord has come," whilst others maintain that it is purely an invocation. Paul was talking to the Corinthians, a people he loved dearly, urging them to unite in faith under the resurrected Jesus, and discover the divinity in their own hearts.

I feel the power of the word, and expereience it as an invocation with a double meaning in that if the 'I' says: "Come to me," it both prays for God to come, but also assumes the voice of Christ Himself, inviting believers to come to Him. If we sacrifice our ordinary consciousness and give ourselves entirely over to Christ, having purified our inner vessel to receive the Holy Spirit, then we are entitled to claim as Christ did: "I am the truth."

So I play a double role in the song... I sing both "Come to me" as the ordinary consciousness might invoke, and also "Come to me" as the higher consciousness might invite. We will become capable of both. I offer it as a future possibility, when we no longer experience ourselves as separate from God.

So 'Maranatha' is a prayer; a chant and an invocation.

I filmed for it in the pure and beautiful Szent Család Kapolna in Nemessándorháza, Hungary (the Chapel of the Holy Family), and the track was originally on an album of mine called "Resurrection."

I love your chant and nice to have some back ground on the word Maranatha. I am sure you have read Prayers of the Aramaic Jesus by Neil Douglas Klotz. It's profound and gives new insight into the meanings of the Lord's Prayer. The Assyrian Orthodox Christians still use Aramaic in Services. I was reciting part of the Lord's Prayer in Aramaic and one of my neighbors knew it from church. I highly recommend the book as a meditation of the deeper meanings of the Lord's Prayer. Beautiful Chant!
