Climate Myth Busters - Who're You Going to Call

Climate Emergency Forum discusses the UN's "Climate Myth Busters" website, which aims to debunk common misconceptions about climate change, highlighting some of the key points.

This video was recorded on April 10th, 2024, and published on April 28th, 2024, and represents the opinions of the discussion participants.

Climate change is already happening and affecting different regions in varying degrees, with noticeable changes in weather patterns, rising sea levels, and more extreme weather events. This is not a future problem, but a present reality. The rapid warming observed in the last 200 years is directly linked to the increased burning of fossil fuels, which has released large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

The hosts express frustration with some scientists who continue to perpetuate myths, such as the belief that limiting global warming to 1.5°C is still possible. They argue that this is a dangerous myth that is not supported by scientific evidence, and that we are already beyond the point of being able to limit warming to that level. The hosts emphasize the urgent need for immediate and drastic action to reduce emissions and transition to renewable energy sources.

Also mentioned are positive developments in the renewable energy sector, with many regions and countries already generating 100% of their electricity from renewable sources along with the potential for job creation, which could offset job losses in the fossil fuel sector. Some optimism is expressed about the potential for a rapid transition to a clean energy economy, but stress the need for a change in mindset and political will to make it happen.

I am 75. I grew up near a city reservoir where winter ice-skating complete with lights, music and a roaring fires were an annual event in my youth. That has been no longer possible for over 40 years! During the summer, a profusion of fire flies (we called them "lightning bugs" as kids) lit up summer evenings. Those magical creatures are still around, but in starkly diminished numbers. Frogs and turtles and dragonflies and crayfish (we called them "crabs") were my childhood companions. A few of them are still around but I imagine they are cavorting with the lightning bugs in a happier place. Human Exceptionalism has scared them away.

The problem with adding more-and-more renewables is that it just adds to the amount of energy available and we continue to use just as much fossil fuels (globally).

Not to mention that renewables are not environmentally harmless, just less harmful.

Paul, climate change is only a symptom of a much larger problem. We are experiencing a biophysical overshoot. This catastrophe will not leave room for a growing economy. We'll be lucky to feed the people we have.

Good conversation! One myth that none of us try to bust is the myth that we can ignore the threat of human population growth. My state in the US has more than doubled in population in the last thirty years. Now, there are far more people than the farmland, water, energy and other resources available in the state can reasonably sustain.

Awesome thanks it’s so hard to explain the myths and lies on climate science after just a few seconds into a conversation you know that moment when you get your 1st eyeball roll 🤣

First Rule of Solar, usually ignored---need less energy.
My fridge runs on 45 watts.

Our existing energy paradigm has made vast fortunes for those who are now our global decision-makers. To expect any "wisdom" from this relatively small cadre of privileged and powerful people is ludicrously naive. Remember the cautionary wisdom of our elders, ensconced in many of our global sacred texts that warns us that "greed is blind". We are living and dying in amidst that tragic reality.

A big myth I’ve encountered a lot is the idea that people can’t take action because they can’t afford an EV or other green tech. In actuality, reducing our consumption is far more effective, and saves you money, rather than costing extra. Driving less or not at all. Living in the smallest home that can reasonably fit your requirements. Buying less stuff in general.

There is no way left, to prevent the billions of deaths, from heat stress and starvation. I'm not sure even widespread Olivine mineral powdering, will save that many people. Only those well informed, who move towards the Poles, and begin growing their own food, really have a chance. Can you blame them for lying, to have more time to get set up?
