Exploring Artisan Water Mixable Oils | Winsor & Newton

Показать описание
Artisan water mixable oil paint is chemically modified to be thinned and cleaned with water, although this range contains linseed oil. They are a great choice for artists with sensitivity to solvents and for those working in shared spaces. The paints are thinned with water here to demonstrate how the fluidity is increased but be cautious about how much you add. As with a solvent and traditional oil paint, too much water can degrade the binder and cause the paint to separate and crack. You can also choose to use solvents with Artisan if you want a slower evaporation rate. Finally, a comparison is made between Artisan mixed with water and oil paint mixed with a solvent to show the similarity in effect on the materials.

I actually really love these, especially the possibility of working with them during winter in the closed area and certain relaxness that comes with working and colouring. The stifness of some colours ocurred, but it is a thrait that is not so important, compared to terpentine smell in small area and mask working, lower workability of some is lower than traditional, but it is a really minor thing, and when added a bit of medium for improved flow, the flow was excellent.
The only thing that bothers me is conservation. Is the conservation same as the conservation of traditional oils?
It would be wonderful if it is. If it is not, it still does not matter, because it is a bomb of the product. Absolutely love it.

They are wonderful!! I love them. I do wish there was an equivalent to Bob Ross’s bright red. Can you give some advice on that?

Unfortunately they tend to be very stiff and their texture and drying times are considerably different than artist's grade oils, so techniques which rely on classic texture and drying times don't work the same with them. I've had a ton of problems with alla prima / wet on wet work because they behave more like semi-acrylic paints than traditional oil paints. Even without fast drying medium some thin films of some colors are touch dry within six hours. They also don't lend themselves well to a lot of Bob Ross techniques such as his mountains or clouds because the paints don't move across the canvas as freely, regardless of if you are using water or solvent as thinner. The pigments and pigment load are fantastic, the clean up is wonderful, but they're definitely harder to use than traditional artist's oils.
