Why does the Russian air force still use the MIG-31?

1 vital aspect you missed is that Mig 31 can cover large distances which is crucial for Russia to safeguard is northern territory

It's not just that. The main reason for its being in service is its integration and data-link. A group of MiGs can exchange information with each other, guide their missiles to other radars, and all this, carrying a considerable supply of R37s. The MiG-31 was the reason for the end of the low-altitude breakthrough doctrine, forcing the US Air Force to switch to stealth technologies, because it was simply impossible to hide from it in tandem with air defense.

I think I saw footage of the Su-24 twice in the video .. however, MiG -31 has been one of my favorites since I was a kid.

Russian always designs equipment to last and for mass production as in event of war they must fight nearly the rest of the world it is crucial to have a large supply of useful equipment even if it is old

the Soviet (Russian) engineers were always brilliant. The MiG 31 was an unmatched beast in it's own time. Still in present day there are not so many platforms that could match it's speed and potential in it's own field. Beautiful airframes 🙏🏻

It's a small fighter in shape but a bomber in function. It is one of the most valuable cruises and nuclear missile delivery platforms in the Russian Air Force. It replaces costly and strategic bombers for small or invaluable missions where any TU bomber would waste resources; They are not the US to buy 10$ components for 1000$

It’s literally one of their best interceptor aircraft.

What I had read was that the Radar & Electronics on the MiG25 and also the MiG31 used vintage valve technology, capable of throwing out a lot of power, which could overcome ECM.
Apparently, the radar on the MiG was so strong that it could even render sterile any animal that unfortunately wandered into its beam. Hence this radar was not switched on whilst on the tarmac.

Mig 31 can fire a salvo of 10 missiles while flying at almost max speed. No other can do a such of thing!
