Let's be honest: Biden chose Harris as his preferred successor four years ago. Yes, that's a consideration for every VP pick, but for a guy (then) in his late 70s with those first strains of Covid still running rampant, he had legitimate reason to actively prepare to possibly die in office. And back then, a lot of us assumed she'd be running instead of him this round, no matter his health, simply due to age. Biden backing Harris as the next president was decided a long time ago. Only the timing of him stepping out of her path to the oval office was unknown.

He did not "choose his successor"... there is an open process taking place and he has endorsed her as a very normal part of that process. People are free to run against VP Harris but they are making political calculations and have chosen to throw their support behind her. Sometimes democracy yields broad and genuine consensus. The people elected Biden's successor in 2020 and she has the full support of the Democratic party.
