Trajan was a great warrior but not exactly the best administrater. He lost conquests in Parthia because instead of integration he chose assimilation in dealing with conquered Parthians. This caused massive revolts. Even in Dacia the Romans eventually had to retreat because Dacia was too hard to defend. So though he made great conquests eventually all of them were lost.

His invasion of Parthia was really forced and unnecessary and was really only under control for a few months before they revolted and took it back. I wouldn’t say he did a good job there, it was a greedy snatch at more power towards the end of his rule. Ps I love Trajan one of my favs but I do think that adding his conquest of Parthia as reason he was great has some of the opposite effect.
