Update and more details (collected from various news sources):

Sam was adopted as a stray kitten and lived with Jennifer for two years on her farm, where he followed her everywhere, until getting scared away by a visitor's dog. He weighed 15 lbs at the time and half that when he was found, less than a mile from her home. She said she hadn't held a cat in her lap in the entire 11 year interim, and says the reunion was only possible because she had Sam microchipped.

Now, he spends most of his time at the foot of Jennifer's bed and doesn't want to go back outside. She says everything has been going great since she got him back.

This is a heartwarming story. Sam is a special little guy. I’m just bewildered how he got out? My girls have rode with me from Ohio to Georgia, back to Ohio, over to Wyoming, back to Ohio, down to Nashville and back to Ohio. My girls have always sat next to me in the passenger seat on the package carrier

Well someone was at least taking care of him but obviously he has never had a vet visit as he would have been scanned as is routine.

This is so wonderful! It always baffles my mind that cats can get lost. They have such a keen sense and definitely are very intuitive. Even if they get spooked, why would they take off so far that they can't find their way back? No reason to run miles from home or even go several blocks.
