This keeps up the persona that was established in the Lord of the Rings trilogy since Legolas only blinks when he’s extremely surprised.

It also makes sense knowing that the elves can sleep while they run and with their eyes open. Technically, in theory, they could have given the ring to Legolas and he could have nonstop ran all the way to Mordor and dumped the ring, if the temptation of the ring and the armies on the move wasn’t a factor.
