Thin Lizzy Albums Ranked From Worst to Best

The boys are back for another album ranking. Today we're taking a look at the 12 studio albums from Irish hard rock band, Thin Lizzy.
****
Thin Lizzy formed in Dublin, Ireland, in 1969. Their music reflects a wide range of influences, including blues, soul music, psychedelic rock and traditional Irish folk music, but is generally classified as hard rock or sometimes heavy metal.

Two of the founding members, drummer Brian Downey and bass guitarist, lead vocalist and principal songwriter Phil Lynott, met while still in school. Lynott led the group throughout their recording career of twelve studio albums, writing most of the material. The singles "Whiskey in the Jar" (a traditional Irish ballad), "The Boys Are Back in Town" and "Waiting for an Alibi" were international hits. After Lynott's death in 1986, various incarnations of the band emerged over the years based initially around guitarists Scott Gorham and John Sykes, though Sykes left the band in 2009. Gorham later continued with a new line-up including Downey. In 2012, Gorham and Downey decided against recording new material as Thin Lizzy so a new band, Black Star Riders, was formed to tour and produce new releases, such as their debut album All Hell Breaks Loose. Thin Lizzy have since reunited for occasional concerts.

Lynott, Thin Lizzy's de facto leader, was composer or co-composer of almost all of the band's songs, and the first black Irishman to achieve commercial success in the field of rock music. Thin Lizzy featured several guitarists throughout their history, with Downey and Lynott as the rhythm section, on the drums and bass guitar. As well as being multiracial, the band drew their early members not only from both sides of the Irish border but also from both the Catholic and Protestant communities during The Troubles.

Rolling Stone magazine describes the band as distinctly hard rock, "far apart from the braying mid-70s metal pack". AllMusic critic John Dougan has written that "As the band's creative force, Lynott was a more insightful and intelligent writer than many of his ilk, preferring slice-of-life working-class dramas of love and hate influenced by Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and virtually all of the Irish literary tradition."

The live album, live and dangerous, is an absolute classic. One of the greats. Thanks for highlighting a much under rated band. We love them here in Ireland 🇮🇪 Greetings to you all.

An interviewer once asked Phil, "What's it like being black and Irish?"
"Like a pint of Guinness, " he replied.

Wow! I wasn't expecting this at all! Haven't even watched the video yet and I'm so excited - one of the all time great rock bands of the 70s and early 80s - massively influential and one of the most underappreciated inspirations for legions of guitar players - I can't wait to hear your analysis of their different phases - I love you guys - my favorite YouTube critics by far - Thank you Joe, Jason, and Kramz - btw- Black Rose is the best Thin Lizzy album - Gary Moore RIP

Really exciting. Completely slept on this week and this band, but listening to first six albums today, it’s really like I’m suddenly discovering a great, idiosyncratic hard rock band right up my wheelhouse. I think like Joe “The Boys are Back in Town” and “Jailbreak” didn’t encourage me to dive deeper for whatever reason (and I’m not even saying these are bad songs). Nice to learn about the different periods and stories (the Madison tidbit is hilarious). Thanks for making!

Thunder and Lightning is way too low on these lists. Did John Sykes run over your dog or something

if Black Rose does nothing for that Seattle-looking bloke, he needs to retire from music listening

edit: and goddamn Fighting while i’m at, what the fuck?!

I really enjoy both when you rank artists that I’m not so familiar with, and artists that I know really well. Lizzy is a band that I grew up with and know inside out. My top 5 would be:
1. Bad Reputation
2. Black Rose
3. Johnny the Fox
4. Jailbreak
5. Fighting

Sorry guys you really dropped the ball with Thunder and Lightning in my humble opinion. Not my very favourite but some of those albums you ranked in front of it are weaker. Wimpy my ass, it’s their heaviest album
