How to CLEAN a Sand Aquarium

Aquarium sand should be cleaned using a gravel vacuum. This is a device known to the hobby for cleaning aquarium substrates. It uses siphoning of water to suck debris off the sand. Cleaning aquarium sand should be fairly easy after you’ve done it a couple tries.

Products:

The first step in cleaning your aquarium sand is to place your gravel vacuum into the water. Start a safe and to allow the water to be sucked through the vacuum and hose. As the water is being pulled through the vacuum you want to gently place it at the top of the sand. You will notice debris start to be sucked up that was on the sand. Continuously clean the top of the sands Intel all debris is removed from your sand.

Maintenance seeing your aquarium is going to be some thing you’re going to have to do every so often. He will most likely have to also clean the sand. The idea is to gravel vac the surface of your sand while also changing out water in your aquarium. This is the whole premise of using a gravel vacuum because you’re removing water while also cleaning your substrate.

If you’re trying to clean your aquarium sand without using this method of a gravel vacuum you can try adding more flow to the tank. The flow moves the debris off of the sand and gets it into the water which will allow your filter to clean it. Remember though, will then eventually have to clean it out of your filter though.

I have a Python vac which I connect to a faucet so I can filter out the dirt and do a water change. So the dirty water goes down my sink. Then I refill the tank with fresh water after cleaning. Right now I have gravel in my freshwater tanks but I'd like to start a planted 20 gallon freshwater tank with sand. Do you see a problem with sand getting sucked up and going into my drain?

Hi I am new to sand, always had gravel & just started a new tank so put in sand. It’s a natural color & I have plants that seem to be doing ok. But the sand seems to be clumping together. So I have long clumps everywhere & I can’t seem to vacuum up the clumps. Any suggestions?
