Показать описание
The golden eagle is the largest representative of the Accipitridae family, second in size only to the harpy eagle. The average weight of an adult golden eagle is 6.6 kg. This bird is so smart that it’s almost impossible to spot. This raptor usually attacks prey several times larger than itself, and poses a real threat even to humans. So where can you find this bird of prey and how can you protect yourself from it?

I knew a sheep rancher in Northern California who told us, we were surveying, that he had an eagle's nest "up the canyon." We were welcome to go anywhere on his ranch, BUT, if we disturbed "my eagles, you're out of here." I was surprised and asked if they took lambs. His response was so memorable I've remembered it for forty years. He said, "son, I have five thousand sheep; I only have two eagles."

These are birds that really underscore the fact that birds are, evolutionarily, dinosaurs.

I have two golden eagles that visit my yard from time to time - it is heavily wooded. I got out of my car once and one was right on the corner of my roof glaring at me. I calmly walked to my door and didn't make any rapid movements. I love the eagles but was glad to get inside the house safely!

Driving a city bus in Burlington, I came across three golden eagles fighting mid air over a fish. They kept diving at each other making the fish holder drop its prey. I stopped the bus and pointed out this incredibly rare sight to my passengers. After a minute, while this aerial ballet continued, I resumed my route, leaving behind these incredible raptors.

My high school sports teams were called the golden eagles and our colors were dark brown and goldish yellow. We looked like badasses in our jerseys as we generally kicked ass

My basketball coach would always talk about the beauty speed, fearlessness and strength of the golden eagle and he expected us to play our opponents like the bird hunted it's prey in pre- game speeches

Good times

Years ago, I saw my first Golden Eagle, enroute to a Hot Springs in Canada. I was on a snow covered, Icy, two lane road on my way to the Canadian Border. I saw an object in road beneath the towering Evergreen Trees ahead of me. What in the World was it? I puzzled ths as I drove towards the black items on the roadside. I drove on, watching the road, the snow, the icy environment and this source of curiosity. When I drove up abreast to it the this lovely Golden Eagle took off, I was looking 'Eye to Eye' with him! He gracefully arced his flight across my window shield and floated down into the Canyon below. I will never forget that experience!

In 1959 we were heading South down to Dallas from Mo and three tornadoes popped up in the surrounding countryside. We didn't see them, but they were reported on the radio. We were traveling down a 2-lane road and its edges wore down into the dust. And then we saw the eagles sitting in the road. The female was sitting with her wings open, slightly flexed and her long feathers were touching both sides of the road. The male was smaller. We sat there and studied their characteristics to make sure what we were looking at and finally decided they could only be golden eagles, driven down by the high winds. My Mom was frightened. Kind of rare for her. Our car was an old '53 Ford and loaded, but was being lifted up by the winds. We were glad we packed what we could.

"These animals can confuse a short person for their prey."

Nope. No confusion. That short person IS the prey.
The confusion is on OUR part in thinking that we're always at the top of the food chain. News Flash: We're not.

4:41 "Apparently, these raptors can confuse a short person for their prey"
These birds are hunting deer, I think they know exactly what they're doing

Golden Eagles are beautiful. I love birds of prey. I have a Red Tailed Hawk living somewhere behind the house and there is a Bald Eagle nest down the road a bit.

I don't see Goldens too often in Wisconsin (more Bald Eagles here). But I did witness a pair take down and kill a young Whitetail doe in an open field a few years ago. The larger of the two came in hot and hit the back of the doe's head lifting her a few feet off the ground. I am not sure if the neck was broken on impact or if the talons severed the spinal column, but the deer was dead instantly and then it was lunch time.

"so smart its difficult to spot'?

In northern Minnesota (where we like to vacation) you can go out on nearly any lake and see several of them guarenteed every day. Theyre MASSIVE
