The First Ever Sub $100 Quad Core Processor

If you owned a quad core CPU mid to last decade then you would have been the envy of all your tech loving friends, and you probably also had more money than sense, considering the high cost of some components. In 2009 though, AMD bought affordable multi core computing to the masses, and released the first ever quad core CPU to cost less than $100 on release.

The Athlon II X4 620 paved the way for budget conscious PC builders to get into the hobby, and considering it matched the once $851 Q6600 in a lot of cases, it was a welcome release to gamers too.

So let's talk about the AMD Athlon II X4 620.

Test Specs:
X4 620 @ 2.6GHz
8GB Ram
GTX 1050
Windows 10

Thanks for watching :)

Man, old motherboards look like they just reached into a bucket of Legos during manufacturing.

I think I have an Athlon II X4 640 lying around somewhere! Don't these Athlons match up nicely against the Core 2 chips?

I had an Athlon II X4 640... OC'D it to 3, 8 GHz and it was rocking hard for 5 years... Oh good time for gaming that was...

I had this! Bought short after it was launched when my s939 rig died, so it was a massive step as single core A64 + DDR1 memory was pretty obsolete back then. One of the best CPUs in my memories.

I just upgraded from a Core 2 Duo to a Core 2 Quad Q6600

My mom is using my old Athalon II x4 640 for her home computer. It was surprisingly capable when you put a decent gpu on it. I only replaced it a year and a half ago with my current 6600k/1060 6gb rig.

I love your work! I have a x4 635 I bought new back in 1972. No jokes aside. It's seen a 8600 gts 256, hd 4670 512, and now a rx 560d 2gb. Still chugging along in my main rig

My first ever quad core was the Athlon ii x4 630 I believe. It was clocked slightly higher at 2.8ghz. I had that and an Hd 4850 I felt like I was on top of the world. That was such a weird shift in computer performance. One day I could run everything max settings, the next, it struggled to play anything modern. I wonder when we're going to see that next huge jump in game demands, things have been on a very slow incline ever since.

I've got an Athlon ii X4 645 & a Phenom ii x4 965 lying around in a little box. Before I bought the Phenom, I used the Athlon, and it was very snappy for Windows 10 and still held up a fight with some slightly newer games back then.

Such an interesting CPU

I can remember building a PC with this CPU in the beginning of 2010. It had my old HD 4670 in it but upgraded that a month later or so to a HD5770, was 16 at the time. Nostalgia to the max for me!

I remember that I bought the II X4 630 back in late 2009 and did use with that one as my daily driver until May of 2014. For it's price it did way beyond of what I did expect from it back then. But yeah, I did use with a GTX 660 with the II X4 630 and I could hit 100% CPU usage very quickly on games that have released since late 2013
