I am so pleased that you are going to keep him! It totally makes sense about the hair although yours has always looked fine to me. 9 year old Jonathan must have looked just like that. The sticking up hair makes him more unique and gives him extra charm. I am low maintenance with my dolls too and actually prefer them to have a small defect to make them special. Just like humans dolls are never perfect. Thanks for sharing your experience. 🥰

I never was into the boy dolls before - but the all-black, sleek outfit you put him in looks really good!

I’m loving these CYO videos! I’m hoping to order another for my collection sometime soon, as I haven’t gotten one in about 3 years. She’d be my third lol… it’s just so hard to choose what doll to create 😆

a black turtleneck makes everybody look better, not only dolls ;-)

For the price, I think it would be worth a call to AG to find out what can be done about the hair. You are right, he looks much better in the black outfit. Congrats on your second CYO!

Keep him! I like his messy hair! As a mom of 2 sons, I can promise you when they were 9 years old their hair was always a mess! 😅

My simple advice: if you aren’t in love with the doll, why keep it? Call and see what american girl will do to fix the hair issue. You are not responsible for the hair being messed up before you even opened the box. I honestly am not a fan of the cyo line as a whole, because of how horrible the website is. You really have no idea what the doll will look like based off of their AI looking images.

I think AG will let you send him into the Doll Hospital for free to get a new head for the hair.

We have had to make boy clothes as well. Simplicity has some great sewing patterns.

Your mini me really is very cute & just changing his clothes gave him such a glow up. Also, was your Josefina always on that top shelf!? She is so stunning ❤

I would send him back to get what I want. Also it would be great if you sold boy clothes. We need them. Boy doll clothes are so hard to find.

You should absolutely add boy doll clothes to your store. I actually don’t have any boys in my collection but I could always use more gender neutral clothing options and I know a lot of people want more clothes for their boy dolls. Your new boy is cute! I feel like his hair is fixable but if not they absolutely will send a replacement or cover a hospital visit if you get a defective doll, even though they say no returns or exchanges. You just can’t get a straight up refund or a different doll, you would have to just replace him with an identical one.

I ordered a CYO girl with light skin and blonde long, straight hair. The hair was so bad in back that I think a worker tried to cover it up by cutting a chunk out. It looked like someone put a too hot curling iron to it and fried the back. You couldn’t tell that once it was secured in the box. Also the hair texture was very different than my other dolls - like the plastic used for dish sponges! AG would NOT take it back or repair it without charge. They told me they get many complaints about the blond CYO wigs especially., but sorry they couldn’t help. I bought an Etsy wig and replaced it myself, but still so angry that they charged so much and it clearly was wrong!

This was so fun to watch the process from start to finish. I think he's pretty cute, I wish we could know if the heat did that to his hair or he really just arrived that way after a rough shipping journey.

I don't know if I'll do a create your own doll or not. I've just purchased a Rebecca and feel like she would be what I would want my CYO to look like. Can't wait to get her and see! My first doll with the smooth hair and no bangs! (I currently have Samantha, Kirsten, and Claudie).

Definitely make boy clothes. There are not enough anywhere. I just started collecting AG in September 2023, I have 10 new, 20 TLC girls) and never thought I wanted boy dolls until your videos! Now I can't wait to make a CYO. I'm not crazy about any of the AG boys available even on Ebay. So, I will spend my money on a CYO. Thanks for the info on face shape. I had no idea what one was what, and now I know. I don't want to spend $220 on the classic shape and have it look like the $115 one. Too flat. Love your videos! You are funny and enjoyable to watch. Your voice is very soothing.

Your critique of the lightest skin tone makes perfect sense as someone with the undertones they use to describe the skintone. I have olive undertones as a fair skin person, and blond or yellow toned hair looks kind of awful on me, as well as blues and purples. If I dress in purples, I end up looking like I'm super ill. Olive under tone fair skin peeps often have issues looking sick or even zombie-like. It's also kind of hilarious to me that AG uses that skintone, as fair olive skin is pretty rare irl--I have the hardest time finding any foundation that matches.

I assume why they use it is due to old resin/plastic's tendency to yellow over time and lose its pinks. In the BJD community, people use that on purpose to say that older, more yellow dolls look more "human" than they started in their original stark white. However newer resin/plastic has much better options to avoid yellowing and losing pink tones, so it could just be due to historical grandfathering?

Why is there so litttle options, for that price there should be as much customizing option as in the sims

It's so funny- every time i order a doll, i watch a video from you where you literally say "i really want a doll just like this"- and it's started to freak me out. I just ordered a "rainbow hair" doll literally just a few hours ago!
