Ulcerative colitis: Fresh approaches to taming inflammation

preview_player
Показать описание
Ulcerative colitis is a common form of inflammatory bowel disease. For many people with the condition, widely prescribed anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressive drugs do not remain effective for long, and up to 15% of patients will need surgery to remove all or part of the colon within 20 years of diagnosis. This animation explores how insights into the immunobiology of ulcerative colitis are helping researchers to develop innovative treatments.

Ulcerative Colitis struck me when I was 18. I'm 38 now so I've lived more of my life with it than without. I'm very sporty and love to travel so on both fronts it's not ideal.
Surgery was the best "treatment", just a j-pouch now. Never have sick days off of work since surgery and in my old job I was able to travel throughout Europe.
Suprisingly after 10 years I insisted on a Colonoscopy (after needing a gastroscopy for a different reason) and my j-pouch was inflamed with ulcers so I'm currently taking a foam enema. Would never had known.

Stay strong people!

A patient cured is a customer lost unfortunately. Hope everyone can stay strong and get through this as easy as possible.

I like this 'nature' approach to animate science; it makes the cold nature of published papers and figures more amiable to others oriented with the medical field

I have been sickly since i was 15 with chronic fatigue, hot flushes, eye pains, altered bowel habits, social isolation/depression untill of late a month ago when i turn 33 and had a colonoscopy done to be diagnosed with ulcerative collitis . Im a medical doctors myself and yet i took a alifetime of physician visits to my frustration on none ever getting close to diagnosis of my problem . I almost had a self request to a gastroenterologist and she could agree more. For the first time in 19 years i had a name to my problem. Now im joined the confusion of what works and what doesn't

Hi dear UC frienda, I've been diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis few years ago, beside of taking 1 mg of mesalamine up my toosh every morning, I've been taking Iodine drops (NATURAL! Not industrial) with selenium and I've been in remision ever since and my medical exams never been better!! Iodine is a miracle for everyone not just for us who are diagnosed!

We need more research into treating the CAUSE not the symptom. WHY do people get UC?

Have been in remission for about 12 yrs, but last year it came back, i cannot attribute one specific thing.... but i had a stressful episode and was eating outside food very often now feeling ok since taking mesacol and home made food only and trying to stay away from stress

As a scientist (not in this field however), this is my general observation in regards to my UC: Chronic Stress is number one and perhaps the only reason I got here. Stress resulted in irregular sleep patterns too. So, lack of regular and enough sleep plus stress means flares up! No stress, no UC. However, when there are flare ups, I do need to get medications to go back to remission. Even if I remove the stress, I cannot go back to normal conditions at all. Anybody with similar situation? I do have a very healthy diet and life style besides.

Why didn't he give the names of any of the new drug therapies?? What use is it if we cannot research them further?

I haven’t seen a doctor in years and can usually stay in remission with diet and supplements, but this recent flare has been so bad and long lasting that i think i need to get on some long term medicines

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease that forms ulcers and causes inflammation in the innermost lining of the large intestine and rectum. In this disease, patient is having loose stools with blood. If left untreated then it can cause life-threatening situations. Other signs and symptoms than it are weight loss, fatigue, general weakness, mucus formation that appears like pus, rectal bleeding, fever, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, bloating, and abdominal cramps.

The biggest flaw in this therapy is that they’re treating symptoms with medication. Why don’t they actually figure out why it’s happening but if they do that then they’ll find a cure which means if they find a cure then the $12 billion biologic industry disappears, you’re not a patient you are a customer and sick customers are good business.

Overeating is the major issue for gut inflammation, apart from other things. 🍴 🎂
*One can treat symptoms for ever, * OR stop overeating by having a smaller plate in the house. Also, the knowledge about the personal food allergies is powerful for personal health !

The 1 thing I’m missing is the blood. But, I have everything else.. The abdominal pain, the runs, the movement of whatever’s inside, due to every turn I make, while laying down. You name it.

The question is, can you "undo" UC naturally? Diet wasn't my issue, stress was. By significantly reducing stress, do we get our lives back?
