I have a friend who is an astronaut and has been in space. I asked him if he knew of this song, and with a wide eyed grin, he replied - "every astronaut knows this song".

Every darned time I watch this is never fails to move me - it brings tears to my eyes both for the pride and astonishment of what we have managed to do as somewhat evolved apes but also in memory of watching that dreadful day in '86 when Challenger didn't make it.

I just had landed a job in Alaska and was on my way there in the spring 1984 and traveling through Canada at the time. I had recently purchased RUSH's latest album on cassette tape 'Signals' before my trip - but had not heard it until I was about half way to my destination along the Cassiar Highway north through British Columbia. On a desolate and remote highway through some of the most incredible country you will ever want to see - I finally got the chance to listen to this latest RUSH installment. Listening through headphones on my Sony Walkman - the song 'Countdown' began. It sounded like a F-15 fighter jet had just crossed over my car from right to left with full-on after burners! Scared the livin' shit out of me and I braked hard to see the jet's flyover only to realize that it was a sound-over in the intro of this song. It left an impression - to say the least! On January 28, 1986 - the Challenger Space Shuttle explosion occurred. My heart sank and I could only think about this song and the vision that Neil Peart and RUSH put into this and the implications of what NASA's mission in space was supposed to be about. While I have my issues with NASA, (Never A Straight Answer) I share my hope with Peart, and RUSH - that space truly is the last frontier - and it's not always going to be easy getting there. As an American who loves the Canadian People - and your country - we are not you adversary - our governments are. Because of that I know there is a bond between Canadians and Americans that go beyond politics. You know it - and we know it. RUSH in their way - had the ability to close that gap not only to us in the US - but to all the rest of us in the world who appreciated and recognized their message in their music. It saddens my heart to say more than you will know - that I will never step foot on Canadian soil again as long as these ridiculous policies are kept in place in the free movement between Canadian and American citizens that we used to enjoy. RUSH was the greatest ambassadors to the rest of the world that Canada should ever be proud of. Long live May your music forever be echoed into eternity!

It was my second year in college, on my way to a technical Diploma. Friends, Malcolm and Corey had just purchased the Album Signals by Rush. This was officially my first introduction to Rush 32 years ago. My favorite RUSH songs are on this Album. Many things in my life have revolved around this album and music. When playing computer games I always used to put the three letter moniker TDM which I derived and accepted as my mantle, I played fast forward just as long as I can cos I don't need a bed, I'm The Digital Man. Countdown and Tears were also high up amongst my favorites. I do not mourn the loss of Neil, I celebrate that he grave us his time and talent to allow us to hear and appreciate his music.

The background about this song is truly beautiful with the fact that NASA invited them to experience it and sit in the VIP area along with high level politicians and others. It's an amazing story.

I was 10 when Columbia took off from The Cape, and around 12 when this song came out. I played it loud as hell in my bedroom over and over again. It's by far one of Rush's secret gems if you loved all that nostalgia, and 80's tech back then. Hearing all the call-outs during the song and visualizing Peart's masterful lyrics describing Columbia as "the sleeping white dragon" was incredible at that age. Thankfully, this song was not lost to time, at an age where music is meaningless and over-produced. I had the amazing pleasure of seeing a few shuttle launches when I was in college in the late 80's and 90's. It was EXACTLY like Neil described it...thank you for creating this video. You did a fantastic job!

“Countdown” (1982) was inspired by the April 12, 1981 launch of the Columbia Space Shuttle, the first reusable manned spacecraft. Rush were guests of NASA for the send-off at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Neil Peart penned the lyrics, which describe the feeling of anticipation and wonder as they took in the epic event. “It was an incredible thing to witness, ” said Peart. “A truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Audio from NASA’s actual countdown was interspersed through this track.

Rush dedicated “Countdown” to astronauts John Young and Robert Crippen, and “all the people of NASA for their inspiration and cooperation.” 💙🚀💚

May you rest in peace, Neil Ellwood Peart (1952 - 2020)… 🌹

I really love this album. It came out during a time when I kept asking myself, "What can they possibly come out with next?" Then they drop this album and I was blown away. I remember seeing them perform in my home town of Houston Texas at the Sam Houston Coliseum and it feels like I just saw and heard them yesterday. I remember seeing Neil banging away on this song and it was brilliant. I still can't believe he's gone. RIP Neil Peart

That riff that starts at 5:00 is one of my favorite Lifeson riffs of all time. It's just so damn mean and that extra beat screws you up at least once every time you try to play along! I love it! 🤘

I worked 8 years at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, next door to Kennedy Space Center and the Space Shuttle.  My Dad worked on the Shuttle's payload, and 1 of my brothers worked in the Shuttle Procurement Dept.  Enjoyed this video - it brings back memories.
