I’ve been saying this for years. You don’t need to talk about super steals when it comes to self-defense.

Agreed, sir. Some people out there acting like you need a multi-hundred dollar custom, 3/8" billet of supersteel to even scratch bare skin without bending the blade!

I have to agree with ya Daniel. It doesn't take a whole lot of money to defend yourself😊. Also off topic, but I notice the ambient music in the background in a lot of your shorts and some of your videos. Absolutely love it bro! Keep using that if you can because it goes so smoothly and it sounds very relaxing! Take care man.

Got to agree. Knives in AUS 8, 420HC, 440C or even A will work for self defense. Even after breaking down some boxes & opening a package or 2. If you do use them frequently, it helps to make sure they get an edge tune-up occasionally.

True, cause it’s more about the shape, weight, and size for me and self defence blades (and it should be reasonably sharp). For bushcraft and military blades (my favourites), it’s about the edge retention and toughness

When life is at stake, you want the best tool for the job. But that doesn't always mean expensive. Even a canister of pepper spray is under $10.

EXCELLENT WORD!!!! I've thought the same. Lets be honest, it's ONE STOP SHOPPING! You may well save your life, hut then comes the legal aspect, the charges, the trial, cthe potential civil litigation...

It def does not take much to make a good self defence blade. As you say, 20 bucks can get you a decent thrower or fixed blade. Not that I recommend throwing for self defence... from much more than a venomous snake.
And yea. Ive seen people demonstrating self defence techniques with things like a ballpoint pen. A lollipop stick...."don't overthink it" is good advice. 👍
And to add to the discussion... I just want to say I like to keep any knife im not using as a tool when in the outdoors, with a much more acute edge on it. So like for example...my kukri. My custom forged workhorse...has a scandi grind to Apple seed edge. For sharpness but also durability. Thats ideal. But thats a 900$ custom forged blade. Most mass produced knives on the cheaper side will have a micro bevel. It a dedicated bushcraft blade will not have less than a 20° angle on the micro bevel. In my experience. I like to keep a self defence knife a bit more acute. About 17° you loose edge retention. But you get more of a razor edge. And it can take time to rework down that angle of the micro bevel. Especially if you have to use sandpaper and files by hand. Without a vice... :/ trust me.. lol. But yea. Angle of the edge and the sheath... how it sits. I also look at the handle material. You don't want something that's a slippery mess once it gets blood on it. So i either wrap the grip with twine. Or hockey tape would work. (I prefer the traditional look of a wrap vs the hockey tape) These are a few of things I also consider. I only have 2 knives i would put in the category of a self defence knife. (And it's nearly usless to me compared to a bushcraft tool) One is a super cheap (under $20) 4 inch fixed blade. Has a wide blade profile with a karambit like grip/pinky ring. The other is a high quality kabar.

Amen to that Brother. Today lots of guys buy their knife according to wich steel it's made of.
I remember in the beginning of the 90's, I wqs rookie, and a spyderco with AUS8 steel was a dream knife 😊 I prefer a well heat treated 440C than a bad Magnacut.
Cold steel for exemple master the heat treatment of their AUS10 verry well.
Personally I don't care about edge retention, I take care of my tools, when they need to be oiled or sharpened 😊

You don't need a big blade for self defense idk why people think they need 5+ inch blades or swords

Facts. My mother was able to defend herself from getting sexually assaulted with a straight razor. Great uncle stopped a mugger with a hawk bill linoleum knife. No 250 dollar Benchmade knife were needed lol.

As a choice. I love D2. But the majority of my blades I hammer out ... I use brush hawg blades friends donate to me. I make KUKRI 'S, tanto's, Bowie's, throwers, I use rasps to make blades an tomahawks, railroad spikes all manner of dumb ideas that take hold of my feeble brain. But you might be surprised at how well the finish product comes out. Enjoy it. HEY LT. DAN...WAS THAT OK. LOLOLOL ENJOY brother watch your hairy smelly six.

The old soldier.
