Redrawing the Map of the U.S. Based on How People Actually Live

Garrett Nelson, a postdoctoral fellow at Dartmouth, specializes in historical geography, meaning, he says, that he’s interested in “how people transform the places they live in, and then, in turn, how those places shape and transform human societies and communities.” Recently, Nelson and a research partner redrew the map of the United States using commuter data and found some surprising connections that cut across traditional political boundaries. Drawing these “megaregions” is part of Nelson’s larger project to analyze the complicated network of relationships that unite and divide society.

Filmed and edited by Chris Johnson.

If anyone wants to talk of messing with state lines, what you found & call megaregions is the best attempt I've ever seen to reflect what federalism aspires the state lines to be.
