I left IT over a decade ago.

I’m getting back in to support Linux. Install, migration, integration, etc. Thanks Micro$oft.

The KDE donation thing has motivated me to donate to the DE I actually use (XFCE).

5:28 this is either wrong or misleading. They have explicitly stated that, no, they're not struggling. The opposite, in fact. They have a SURPLUS of cash to the point that, since they are a NON-PROFIT, they have to spend their cash. At the very least, that was their statement on the reddit thread of Phoronix report that paint it as more dire than it is.

Now, yes, that would leave them having to scale back eventually if they don't get extra income. Combine that with all the reasoning they have stated in Nate's blog, it's why they are asking for donations. But they aren't struggling- it would still be more accurate to say that they are successful but want to be more successful.

7:13 Notification Donate to KDE
It's important to note this once per year notification can be turned off to "never per year" as well. So anyone complaining about this has no rights to complain.

As someone who has donated to KDE before, a remind is welcome to me.

There are hundreds of millions of windows 10 machines that do not meet the requirements for Windows 11. If just 1% of those convert to Linux there will be some pretty major gains!

Linux Mint is my distro of choice once I stopped distro-hopping. Cinnamon Desktop, the stability of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, x11 for screen capturing and sharing, and Flatpak instead of Snaps! In my opinion the best of all worlds for a distro!!

Of course KDE needs donation.. And of course they needed to 'overspend', but really, from a German perspective (it is an e.V.) it was a must to lower the 'stash' so technically they did NOT overspend. Schatzmeister did the right thing. Many Youtuber who were talking about that this week have not the competence to understand this legal form which is specific for Germany.

Just donated 30€ to KDE. I dont use KDE anymore, but i didnt switch cause i didnt like it but it had issues for me. Might not be KDE related, but have not seen as many issues on Gnome.

But i do still use GSconnect/KDE Connect so... Yeah.

And even if they didnt work out for me it doesnt mean i dont wanna support them. KDE is cool imho. Just having options is nice, and gets more people into Linux.

21:51 I want to note that while Linux desktop typically isn't a target for malware, if the marketshare continues to grow we will very likely see more malware for Linux. Iirc, there is already malware for the server side (since Linux dominates that market), so it's not like Linux is immune. Just saying this to add another perspective, since I'm a bit concerned that us Linux users are a bit too used to not having to worry about malware.

As a primarily custom Windows user, I sincerely hope Linux grows. Microsoft need to be taken down a peg, ideally Google do too.

We need Linux and non-Chromium-based browsers to grow and fast.

If once a year notification is annoying, u have the source code, go ahead, modify it and use it, simple.
I wanted to donate, but rn I m a student... will certainly donate with my first salary to all individual linux for desktop devs.
I also wanted to build a project which helps people to donate based on the packages they have installed.

I remember when the only way to run Linux was building it from scratch with minimal instructions and a lot of guessing. LFS made this easier as all you did was follow instructions. Then distros became “the thing”. Amazing how it’s all evolved from the early days of ‘91/‘92

I had a 12 year old Alienware 17 lying around so I thought I'd give Linux a hard look. I chose Mint. Here's what I've observed. Windows users hate on Mac users and Mac users hate on Windows users but Linux users hate on each other. Read some comments below and you'll see what I mean. "I wouldn't use that god awful excuse for a desktop environment if that were the only thing available." Stuff like that.

KDE Neon has been my daily driver for quite a while now!

Gnome never worked for me; tried many times but came back to Windows after many problems but after that I tried KDE Neon and it worked for me amazing and stable. KDE also few issues but those issues never bother me and the KDE forum is amazing where we can just create the bug and they solve it with new fix. There are some bugs which is known and didn't fixed yet. But they're at least knew that there is problem in that particular things.

I'm a Gnome user and not at all interested in KDE, be it KDE Neon, Kubuntu or any other KDE version. But I hope their user will help them.
