Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV 2021 Review @carsales.com.au

The 2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV has arrived as one of the most affordable plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in Australia, but that doesn’t mean it’s cheap.

Priced from $46,490 plus on-road costs, it costs about $12,000 more than equivalent petrol-powered versions of the facelifted small SUV. You can buy a purely battery-powered small SUV for less than that.

But unlike an EV, plug-in hybrid vehicles like the 2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV, which comes standard with all-wheel drive, don’t leave you stranded when their battery pack is depleted and offer the same range as their combustion-powered equivalents.

Mitsubishi says that makes PHEVs the best of both worlds, especially in countries like Australia, while others point out that the extra weight of two different propulsion systems reduces fuel efficiency and that the low official fuel consumption figures of PHEVs can only be achieved if drivers keep their batteries routinely charged.

With the era of electrified vehicles well and truly upon us, the other question new-car buyers are grappling with is which flavour of hybrid to go with. Plugless hybrids like those from Toyota are cheaper, more convenient and much more popular, but don’t deliver as much electric range and therefore overall efficiency as PHEVs.

Can Mitsubishi convince buyers to try its more advanced PHEV tech? We take a closer in this full video review.

I've had the opportunity to drive the Eclipse Cross PHEV.

I enjoyed everything about it and I really couldn't make any reasonable criticism, other than if we commit to going green then we need to pay extra for the cutting edge technology and there will always be some level of compromise.

I also like the fact that this vehicle doesn't look like a weird form of transportation from a sci-fi movie.

Internally the quality feel good and is both functional and durable, there were no cheap plastics in the car I drive, and the driver's seat was perfectly positioned and comfortable for me and I'm 185cm tall.

Unlike other governments around the world whom encourage buyers into green vehicles our federal government is typically lagging behind and making Australia appear incapable.

I was pleasantly surprised at the sporty handling considering its never been the intension to make this into a sports car, it felt secure and cornered with confidence, even when driven enthusiastically.

Great SUV and I love the smart external design, quite stunning in metallic diamond white.

Phev technology needs to be properly analyze if you really want to save Gas. Heaps of people out there have a Phev SUV but they use it improper and unsuitable to their surroundings, In short it was use wrongly. For example, many out there owns a Phev but when they travel long distance they shift the Regenerate Braking in to Drive mode or D witch is wrong because it will consume a lot of Gas because the force of regenerate breaking still high and that engine will have more difficulty because the brake is still stuck and it needs more gas, The Proper way of using phev on a highway is shift your steering wheel shifter to B-O and if your going down a hill then that's the time you shift to K1 up to K5 if you need to add a little on your battery. Phev is a very complex technology, If you know how to use it then you get a good result.

Just wondering what is EV Tax? I can't understand??

I agree with your conclusion. Mitsubishi wasted a good opportunity to attract new buyers to PHEV, with the high up-front cost (defeats the benefit of fuel savings).

12 grand premium for a nearly 10 year old power train. Ouch… Trouble with these is that they are nicest to drive when they’re fully EV so you might as well pay the premium and go full EV imho… (i have an outlander PHEV unless the new one has a significantly better powertrain I’m going to wait for an EV that does the job…)
