Is the MacBook Pro 2020 with Apple Silicon M1 chip good for software engineers and developers?

"16 GB... is equivalent or better than 32-64 GB of regular RAM" - that makes no sense to me. If I'm loading a dataset into RAM, there's no way on earth that half the RAM will somehow load in that same amount of data.

Finally someone talking from the perspective of programmers and enginneers. The fact that "pro" has become synonymous with video editing is infuriating. Creative professionals, the world does not revolve around you. We have to wait and see how it performs and what is the compatibility in the real world. Altough with erything in enterprise world is pretty much legacy software and all on x86, macs seem to give up on that market. The next 2 years will be interesting to watch.
As for why the limit is 16gb ram and why it was only 2 usb-c usb4/tb3 combo ports. Both of them are limitations of the SoC. 16gb is the limit of the onboard memory controller (probably due to being derived from the mobile designs). As for the 2 ports, that is due to having only 1 controller. macbooks with 4 ports have 2 external controllers for the tb3 ports (1 controller can handle 2 ports). In time they will do better designs.

It would be nice see how it performs using Intellij for Java / android, android emulator, and docker. As far as I know Intellij is not optimized for apple silicon yet. Another concern that I have is the Chrome's ram consumption while developing and the 16 Gb Ram constraint.

I'm still on the 2018 15" MacBook Pro, I can't wait for Apple to make a new 16" MacBook Pro with an Apple Silicon chip.

My thoughts: 1. 16 GB of RAM, even with the compression and optimization is not like 32Gb. is more like 20 or 24Gb. Efficiency in the use of RAM usually refers to not copy data from CPU to GPU wich get gains in terms of speed, not amount of RAM (specially if you consider discrete graphic cards with their own ram). As a developer, is better to have an Intel Mac because it enables you to develop for Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS and Android in the same computer. With ARM you will loose the hability to develop on Windows platform... is something you need to evaluate yourself. And if you need to develop on very specialized platform like Crestron or Lutron (like myself), that will be not possible on ARM chip, at least at the beginning :-(

GPU:
AMD Radeon PRO 5500 > M1

Ram:
About equal for 16 & M1

Battery:
M1 > 16

Cooling:
M1 > 16

Not all software (Abelton, Android Studio, etc) is ready for use on M1.
M1 has no support for parallels or eGPU.

I'd personally stay out of it at least for the next 2 years just to be sure everything works perfectly. Intel Macs are not that bad either, especially if you have a 2019 or 2020.
