Yes, here in Hong Kong, people are tied with expensive rents and mortgages. Salaries go into the pockets of unscrupulous bankers, landlords and mortgage companies. So what's the point of this high GDP numbers on papers when people are actually living poorly?

This debate is a typical economist' debate. It's all about numbers, growth and (historical) extrapolation. Technically, real exponential growth is an unsustainable road, but I haven't heard any of these experts say anything about it. Let alone topics like inequality and definition of growth (what does growth actually mean in terms of sustainability, material wealth, equality of opportunities, etc.).
