The Secret to Persuasion & Influence? It’s not what you might think…

There are many different models of persuasion and influence. When we look at the theoretical model (also known as Aristotle’s Model of Influence), there are three components:

🧠 LOGOS – An appeal to logic, reason & rationality. Think facts, evidence and data.

–This is where the world of business focuses too much of its attention. But logic doesn’t change behavior.

Then we have:

❤️PATHOS – An appeal to the audience’s emotions, fostering an emotional connection. Think stories that draw an emotional response.

–We are emotional creatures, and as much as we like to believe our decisions are entirely rational, they’re often mostly driven by emotion.

BUT…
we often forget about the third and arguably most important element of persuasion and influence – the person delivering the message:

🏆ETHOS – This is your personal credibility, presence & perceived character. It’s all about WHO you are, and not just WHAT you say.

In the world we live in today, where we’re bombarded with choices and information overload, ETHOS has never been more important.

Why?

Because people need to TRUST US before they TRUST OUR MESSAGE.

And this is all about living a life of value, driven by a high moral standard. Having integrity, treating people kindly, being honest and consistency in behavior…

It’s something we call strive for, every day.

In large part, most people are looking out for their own self interests. When you can show that it's in their self interest to adopt your point of view wrapped up in an idealistic manner you will be a tour de force among your peers. Most people want to feel important, and they want to be recognized. When you attain these objectives you won their favor.

Oh, I see. I just heard this a few weeks ago; Logos, Pathos, Ethos. It’s components of a good Rethotics (public persuasion), as taught by Aristoteles.

Shade, have you thought about the order in which you need to use those three? In my mind, you need to create the trust first. So ethos comes first. Then you need to appeal to their emotions. So Pathos comes next. Now they are ready for the facts, and data. That's logos. So ethos, Pathos and logos, in that order. What are your thoughts?
