Is Ricky Gervais Still Funny?

Ricky Gervais' new comedy special, Armageddon, just dropped on Netflix. But as I was watching it, I began to ask myself the quesion... is Ricky Gervais still funny?

Ricky Gervais has won seven BAFTA Awards, five British Comedy Awards, two Emmy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and the Rose d'Or twice (2006 and 2019). Now he’s sitting on a net worth close to $200m… not bad for a philosophy graduate huh?!

But it was his edgy, cheeky style of humor that got the attention of the Golden Globes, which saw him host the award show five times, in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, and 2020.

However he has now made the decision to focus on stand-up comedy, which is where he first started out.

0:27 hey bro,

I’m a huge fan and have watched all your videos but this really let me down.

I’m severely Allergic to Peanuts, just typing it myself I had to take a Benadryl.

I’m gobsmacked you’d just throw out allergens without trigger warnings.
I also can’t believe you’d enjoy something that you know would kill at least one of your fans. Your fans make you bro. You want them to die??

Sincerely,
A fallen fan

Remember kids, being cancelled is when Netflix pays you $40m to speak infront of millions of people.

I love Ricky Gervais and some of his TV work has been borderline genius, but I just can't squeeze a laugh out of his stand-up.

Instead of addressing Free Speech they should just use use it.

I'll stick to 20+ year old XFM clips. Nothing beats the trio.

Thanks for reminding me how good Rickys old standup was, and ye it is really sad to see so many comedians get caught up in the ridiculous "politically correct" and "cancel culture" bullshit.... it only shows how truly disconnected they are from regular life and the average human and is truly tiring to listen to them go on and on about something that doesn't fucking exist outside of their little bubbles.

I have the same realization with Katt Williams. Like he's still one of my top picks but his last special didnt even get me to chuckle. Still respect Katt and Ricky for what they've done for comedy.

I personally like how he hates on fat people while his body looks like a melted ice cream cone

Norm (my GOAT) said that too many comedians want to look smarter than funny.

The whole crying about "wokeness" is getting annoying

I don't see Bill Burr has gone PC like you suggested. I think he's tired of all the self-important comedians he's surrounded by and their 'last bastion of free speech' talk, and is just annoyed by it. Like with the Rogan convo, 'Let's not start this, Joe...I'm not gonna sit here with no medical degree, listening to you with no medical degree...' That's how I see Burr now, just exasperated by group think and narcissism of comedians.

As a brit, I was never that keen on his standup. TV writing he was great, and he's good in interviews. Stewart Lee is my favourite UK stand up, severely underrated too

I'll always be a fan of Ricky, especially when he shredded the golden globes. Sometimes when I'm bored I'll re-watch it, and I always get a good laugh out of it.

"Weird drama teacher vibe, " that's a good one. Gervais has struggled with his tendency to appear this way since the beginning. I'm from the UK, and can remember Gervais Channel 4 TV specials at that point at the very beginning. A long time before he was successful. They were seriously hit-and-miss TBH.

We don't need any more specials crying about wokeness.

I will always love Ricky, but agree this wasn't his strongest special.

Funny I watched it the other night with a couple of drinks under my belt as and was also disappointed. The biggest problem was he spent half of the time explaining why you shouldn’t be offended by the jokes which meant we got very little comedy and lots of Ted Talk on the nuances of comedy and cancel culture. I think he played it way too safe, sure he chucked in supposedly outrageous jokes but then explained he didn’t actually mean what he just said. Very surprised that he done that. Another great vid bud I have the exact same taste in comedy as yourself so love your takes. Be well.

It may just be me but I have a hard time taking any comedian seriously that whines about being “canceled” on stage filming their multimillion dollar Netflix specials.

This may make me sound like an old man but I remember edgy comedians back in the day like Pryor, Carlin, Kinison, Dice-Clay etc making their jokes and then not giving a shit if people were offended. If you’re going to be an edgy comedian just own it. Stop crying about the backlash.
