I went to a spot in Virginia hoping to see a Short-eared Owl, I was not lucky!
But I ended seeing the biggest flock of wild turkeys instead! Over 35!
Gear used: Nikon Z6 II and NIKKOR 500mm f5.6 PF. Thanks for stopping by!

Wild turkeys by me. I just startled the daylights out of one. I didn't know it was there. When they take off it's like a helicopter, lots of wind and noise. It's amazing they can fly at all. 🤪

Great photography. Thanks. The turkeys must have a wonderful feeling to fly from one field to the next and land there in delight anticipation and with care.❤

So much for the myth that turkeys can't fly. What's next? Emus or penguins?

They were like WW2 bombers needed a good run prior to take off

All hens; they group up just before the breeding season begins. We have thousands in the Columbia valley in BC Canada, up from being introduced in Idaho 100 years ago for game bird hunting.

Any serious outdoorsman knows that wild turkeys can fly. How else would they reach their roosts in tall pines that hano lower branches? I've seen them fly straight up to get over 70-80ft oaks, then gain altitude, fly a few hundred yards, then glide across the hollow to the next mountain!!! They are not farm raised birds.

Domestic, aka store bought commercially bred turkeys, are generally unable to fly. Genetic manipulation by humans made them too heavy/awkward to fly. All that extra weight on the breast makes them aerodynamically bound to the ground. Or so my turkey raising relative tells me. Makes sense. 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦

Way cool! They are sitting ducks, though.

I know they can fly as I had one connect with my windshield while driving a blue highway in Missouri. They came out of the woods next to the highway and I braked as best I could while hauling a travel trailer and almost missed them. It looked liked a bowling ball was dropped on my window. It cost almost $700 to replace the windshield. Fortunately I had replacement insurance.

I have them around my house and it’s fun to see them takeoff running, and then fly up to the roost behind my house.

Slow motion is overused in wildlife video. Wish the original was also included to show people how fast turkeys actually fly.
