"Trauma" and “PTSD" have become trending buzzwords in recent years, widely referenced in memes, tweets and TikToks. They are among other self-diagnosed “mental health issues, " including "OCD, " "anxiety" or “insomnia." Trauma is strictly defined as the result of an exposure to "actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence, " according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), and is a standard definition used across the US. DSM also specifies that stressful life experiences, such as going through a divorce or being fired, are not considered a "trauma, " unless there is a threat to life involved. So, while the memes say otherwise, going through a bad relationship, having strict parents or a challenging school life, by definition, should not be considered "trauma." Throwing the word around can actually be more problematic, because it lays out a narrative where one is completely devoid of agency or control. In this narrative, a person is subjected to "toxic" treatment, meaning our minds go into survival mode and our belief systems are altered, often leading to "getting issues."

"Using the word 'trauma' turns every event into a catastrophe, leaving us helpless, broken and unable to move on, " writes Nick Haslam, a Professor of Psychology at the University of Melbourne. Stressful experiences can still be significant, and have consequences that affect our lives. However, using the word "trauma" risks trivialising actual traumatic incidents, placing them in the same category as illegitimate ones. "We're not as fragile as we think, " says Michael Scheeringa, a professor at Tulane University. Thus, making the distinction between bad life events and actual traumatic incidents is perhaps to the benefit of all. 👌
