In this video I'm going to show you how I finished a Birch five piece shaker flat panel cabinet door using a water based stain and lacquer finish from Aqua Coat.

This isn't intended to be a how to video, but more of a hands on demonstration for someone interested in learning about finishing with water based or waterborne products.

If you are new to finishing with water base or waterborne finishes, this might be a good introduction to water.

Stain: Aqua Tone Water Based Stain - Amber
Finish: Aqua Coat Water Based Lacquer - Satin (self seal)

Scott thank you for this video. When you prepred the wood, did you sand and then wet the wood to raise the grain between each prep sandings? I think I have heard that called "pre-raise the grain" so it doesn't raise from the wb stain when it is first sprayed. I have found that water based stain looks blotched in high humidity high temperatures (no air conditioning and I live in east texas) with any pine, European beech, some birch, fur and native cedar. I had less trouble with western red cedar but I have not worked with it much. I do like the aqua coat filler and thank you for demonstrating the water based spray on top coat finish. Good looking stuff.

Scott, another great video, thanks for the content. Would a pre-sealer help with any potential blotch or do you find it's just an added step that isn't necessarily worth the extra time and effort when taking these results into account?

Interesting that aqua coat recommend sanding to 320. That will definitely reduce the amount of dye or stain that will penetrate the surface. Would you specify in regards to what you are referring to when you say solvent based stains are you talking about oil, lacquer, acetone, alcohol etc. I just have never experienced a slower dry time with water base stains or dyes. Maybe there’s is a slower dry time. It very interesting. Did you see any bubbles when switching to the .009 tip vs the .012 on spray out.

Good video with a lot of useful information. I noticed that after sanding to the powder you simply blow the doors off. Am I right that you don't clean them with a cloth or did that just get edited out. Keep up the good work I learn something with every video.
