Karen Knorr is an American photographer born in 1954 in Germany and raised in Puerto Rico. Her photography often explores themes of identity, gender, race, and power dynamics. She has exhibited her work in various galleries and museums and has also published several books. Her work has been recognized and awarded by numerous organizations.

Throughout her life, Karen has been driven by her curiosity and passion for photography, art, and culture. Her experiences growing up in a diverse and artistic environment, studying with influential mentors, and exploring various processes and theories have shaped her approach to photography and art.

She was given a Kodak Brownie camera as a present when she was nine, which sparked her interest in photography. Her mother was a photojournalist who wrote for the Stars and Stripes in Frankfurt and her father was an editor and an international businessman.

After completing high school in Puerto Rico, Karen went to the United States at Franconia College, an experimental school where she studied photography with Eileen Cowin. She experimented with various processes, such as gum bichromate and solarization, and was exposed to the work of Diane Arbus, Robert Rauschenberg and alternative processes.

Karen left Franconia College feeling limited and returned to Puerto Rico. Her father suggested she consider going to Paris, where her mother had a small apartment. She agreed and moved to Paris.
