As hybrid owner, the one extra savings that I did not expect that typically doesnt come up in these comparisons is how much longer your brakes last because of the regen brakes. I have over 130, 000 miles and I still have my original brakes. On gas only cars I have driven in the past, I typically would have had to replace my brakes twice by now. Replacing the brakes is not a cheap service.

you forgot the cost of the insurance, maintenance and resale value. Generally, hybrid cars are more expensive to insure, slightly cheaper to maintain and the resale value is usually higher.

When I bought my hybrid last year, I figured 4.2 years to cover the additional hybrid expense. Local price of a gallon of gas today has dropped to $2.69. This, combined with driving less than planned, places me on schedule to take almost seven years to pay for the hybrid option. I keep my new Toyotas for over ten years, so I'm still happy.

The dealers usually add another $4, 000 to $6, 000 markup on the Toyota Hybrids as they are in such a high demand. So $8, 000 more than a gasoline-only powered car. It will take you 14 years just to recoup the extra costs, and at that point you will need a new hybrid battery at $3, 000 + $2, 000 labor, or $5, 000 in total.

You must add in breakage. My 2012 Prius V was dealer maintained. Around 150k had a gasket replaced for $1300. At 189000 had to replace the main gasket for $3700.
Then, my 2016 again dealer they tell me I need a short block....$7000+
So much for the vaunted Toyota durability.
So, got great fuel economy, but gave it all back with repairs plus some.

Don't just look at MPG, if you're living or working in a city where you have to put up with traffic jams everyday, then it's worth it to buy a hybrid. One time, I was going to New York City and I was stuck in traffic near the Holland tunnel for 45 minutes. My Prius engine was off most of the 45 minutes. In the winter time, I don't need to warm up my Prius. When the engine is cold, the computer will use most of the power coming from the electric motor until the engine is warmed up.

Great vid! In my opinion, the break even point will com much sooner, for someone who's driving 80% in city traffic and 20% on highway, and will take quite longer if he uses the car mainly for highway trips.. ( speeds around or above120km/hr) Maintenance costs wont make any difference since they're almost identical for both options for the first 6-7 years of use. (ie annual oil replacement)

Then again, a RAV4 hybrid is a better car than the regular RAV4, quieter and quicker and the AWD system is better and cheaper to maintain.

It appears that approximately all of the cash you saved on fuel will be spent on a hybrid battery replacement.

I was about to put a spreadsheet together and decided to check youtube to see if someone else already did a good one and you did it perfectly.

Don’t forget it’s 15% on average more to insure a hybrid plus local government will sometimes tax Hybrids due to lost tax revenue from gas

could have been great to see how much the gas saving can cover maintenance cost specially replacement of the hev batteries, unless you sell your hev before they are due for replacement. nice comparison though.

2 most important factors that she left out are: 1. Insurance cost 2. Maintenance cost. These are the 2 that would make you think twice owning a hybrid and thinking that you are saving

You're completely missing out another big saving: the wear and tear parts such as clutch, break disks and pads.

I drive mostly highway, I get 35 mpg with regular rav4 (2022). So if you don’t drive in city too much it does not make sense to get hybrid.

But if you want to avoid an expensive hybrid maintenance 15-20 years down the road, get regular rav4.

Also if you don’t drive often, hybrid battery goes bad, so for long term storage, get regular rav4.

But I have to say, hybrids are mostly made in Japan and have better paint and interior quality.

Very good video. Nicely organized and clearly captures the key elements you should look at. Excellent presentation.

I've been asking myself this for a while. Thank you!

One neat thing about hybrids is that they're quieter and in the city the torque is so good that it's a better buggy for going from one stop to another. Not that big of a deal on the highway of course.

Great video. I have been surprised for quite sone time that so few people seem to know how quickly a hybrid can pay for the extra initial cost via fuel savings. The other thing I have found is most hybrid owners achieve or get better fuel economy than the car is rated for while I virtually never hear that from non hybrid owners. Maybe hybrid owners just make an effort to maximize fuel economy.
