That just isn’t an acceptable use of the lunge whip. Horses don’t need to be hurt or taunted like this is training. Whipping the front and back of the horse in the way did isn’t training it to be anything other than scared. Unfortunately there are to many cases where people with competition horses take an overly heavy handed approach to dealing with the horse. I don’t think this is a bad thing to make an example of such a high profile equestrian. Hopefully that will filter down to everyone and help change how people treat their animals!

The fact that the person filming (or someone very near) is chuckling while the horse is being whipped speaks to the acceptance and normalization of this behavior.

When it comes to events involving animals, be it breed shows or some other form of competition where money, prizes, recognition, ribbons or some other benefit to the human is at stake, it is the animal that suffers. For too many, animals are seen and treated as nothing more than objects rather than the sentient beings they are.

I have had horses all my life. A lunge whip should NEVER make contact with a horse. It's very sad to see someone that has always said she is a kind rider act in this way. I would sadly expect to hear this news about other riders but it's even more shocking that it's her
