When I first read this book I was appalled another book based on heroine & a crazy girlfriend. But, then the protagonist ran it into particulars that that is what drove him to India in the first place -running away. He illegally took conventionals given it to men & women. Shortly, after they're bodies became twisted, the M.D.'s there diagnosed them with rheumatism then prescribed hydrochloride notwithstanding I am not sure how they came across this substance, but they could not go to the bathroom and died floating in the Red Sea. Sounds familiar yes, this has happened before one in the 60's & 80's.

Rightly brought out by the reviewer that one major deterrent of this book is its thickness, but if that can be overcome, it's an interesting read which, surprisingly for its volume, doesn't drag. Also, it's good that the author doesn't glorify crime. Though a work of fiction, much of it is inspired by true experiences of the author and it's difficult to separate facts from fiction.
On a separate note, and not drawing any comparisons at all with 'Shantaram', if you're the kind who likes to follow the lives of characters across decades and countries, W Somerset Maugham's 'The Razor's Edge' and 'Of Human Bondage' are unparalleled treats.
