So basically what we assume is happening? Whenever a current flow to through a coil(0:28), a magnetic field is created. So when you first connected the battery, the coil did not rotate. It only rotated when you placed the magnet against the body of the battery. Since a magnet has its own permanent magnetic field and the current through the coil created a second magnetic field, the North/South end of the magnet opposed the North/South end of the magnetic field of the coil. So when you gave momentum to the coil, the North/South of the coil kept opposing the North/South end of the magnet causing a rotation. (North-North oppose) (North-South attract)
