Curious about a career in law and what it takes to work as a paralegal at a leading law firm?

Alice Robinson shares her experience working as a paralegal in the Personal Injury team at Slater and Gordon Lawyers, including the route she's taken in her career so far and advice for anyone interested in a career in law.

Transcript:

I’m a paralegal in the Employers’ Liability team. An average day for me in the office is that I might come in, speak to a few clients, take witness statements, draft schedules of loss. I might go to court if there’s a hearing or a trial on or sometimes we’ll have conferences with the barrister to discuss the client’s case and the next steps. I got into law because I wanted to help people. I studied at college law at A-level and I decided I didn’t want to go to university so I did a two-year apprenticeship as paralegal apprentice and then studied my degree part-time as a paralegal. So I do one day a week studying at university and then four days in the office.

Advice for anyone wanting to get into law I’d say definitely do it because there’s lots of departments for you to go into and if you find one style of law isn’t for you I’m sure another one certainly will be.

It is hard work but it’s quite rewarding in the end, especially when you’ve helped an individual get back on track with their lives.
A good day is when I’ve settled a case and someone’s just said how thankful they are.

I enjoy helping clients get back to how they were before their accident.

Slater and Gordon recognise individuals who work hard and I certainly consider myself to be one of those individuals and, as a result they’ve put me forward for a lot of awards and nominations, which is obviously a massive achievement.

I love it. It’s fabulous.

Banking is a very expansive career. Becoming paralegal or barrister requires strong portfolio and time management skills.
