Does The Killers “Mr Brightside”: sound familiar?😳

how is “Mr Brightside” connected to Blondie and Placebo? 🤷‍♀️ we hear the same 2 note hook (“Jealousy”, “….to the sea” etc.) in the same place - the very start of the choruses of both Blondie’s “Dreaming” AND Placebo’s “Special K.” But guess what? Nobody can own those two notes, whose usage is so frequent - and predictable in its usage - that musicologists have a name for it: the ti that all but requires a resolution on the “do” is known as a “tendency tone.” Nobody can own this, its simply a common building block of music. So, go write your own damn song using it (just be sure to change the lyrics…and MAYBE don’t also start your chorus with it!) 🥰 on the new One Song we dig DEEP into the stems & stories behind The Killers 2004 smash “Mr Brightside”

Thank God The Killers did what they did. Because that song still kicks ass after all these years.

I CANNOT STRESS HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS SHOW

I love how these videos serve as a reminder that music is relatively finite in its construction. At times you might feel like that’s limiting or even pointless to keep creating, but I think it’s somewhat freeing. Just write music. Write what makes sense to you. And say what you want to say without regard for whether or not someone has said or done it before. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel or usher in a musical revolution. Just express what YOU want to express. (Reminding myself just as much as anyone else for sure)

The difference is in the modulation though. The Killers use it so effectively that has really become their unique brand.

Great comparison with Blondie. Never noticed that before.

Yea. Certain periods you’ll hear songs using the same chord progressions and harmonic devices cause they work.

The Beatles "Misery" does the same melody on the word "Misery". Funny how each similar melody is sung with the same rhythm and timing in the bar. Cool stuff!

That’s what I thought, in the beginning it reminded me of “special k”

It's called in general terms an appoggiatura! Beatles and a lot of masterful melodic writing in all styles of music put a lot of brief dissonance notes outside of the chord in their melody to cause tension before it can resolve. I often personally find it boring and lifeless if every note fits every chord perfectly.

Glad I'm not the only one impressed Andy Dick is a musicologist now

There’s a David Bowie song where a snippet sounds EXACTLY like the verses on Mr Brightside. I know it’s on Hunky Dory but I forget which song it was. If someone has it pls provide.

I wish I could understand music on this level. I just know sounds I enjoy but don’t have an actual ear. I tried to teach myself bass and that wound up with me in tears and a p bass in my closet
