In this video captured by NASA’s Perseverance rover, the agency's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter took the first powered, controlled flight on another planet on April 19, 2021.

The rover was parked at “Van Zyl Overlook,” about 211 feet (64.3 meters) away in Mars' Jezero Crater and chronicled the flight operations with its cameras.

These images from the rover’s Mastcam-Z cameras show the helicopter hovering above the Red Planet's surface. During this first flight, the helicopter climbed to an altitude of 10 feet (3 meters), hovered, and then touched back down on the surface of Mars.

Ingenuity is a technology demonstration. The 4-pound (1.8-kilogram) rotorcraft will help determine whether future explorations on Mars could include an aerial perspective.

Perseverance touched down at "Octavia E. Butler Landing" with Ingenuity attached to its belly on Feb. 18, 2021. The helicopter was deployed to the surface on April 3.

ETs probably slow clapping and thinking this is payback for the crazy summer of drone swarms they gave us back on earth.

Im so glad that this has worked. Our first flight on mars. Proved it can be done in such a thin atmosphere. 1% of our atmo pressure here (.88) psi...on mars

ET might be zipping around space, air, and sea with ease. But this is a big deal for humanity I think. Good job everyone.

Play at x25 and look carefully at the 21/22 second mark.. there appears to be a black spot going back and forth. Probably dust or something but interesting nevertheless..first it flies in top left to center then reappears lower right.

How cool would it be to tell someone "I flew a drone today. Where? On Mars."...

Can someone explain to me how that thing can lift off when Mars has less than 1% of earths atmosphere?

So there is a thin atmosphere just like they said years ago, it's the same as high altitude here on earth totally breathable. So the two astronauts that were on mars may have really been on mars for years.

So how much was that per in, or was it per foot?

As someone that does a lot of CG animation etc i don't think it looks fake as far as visuals etc. The only thing I find odd is how it lands, maybe it's the distance or how the landing mechanism is built but I would expect a slight bounce on landing. Personally I think it's legit though.

I wonder if the Martian dust-devils will be a hazard to this gizmo, and how this factor has been planned for.

It worked. Neat. 😂 I was expecting more though.

Look at the shadow... no sense at all. At such altitude is bassically impossible to project a shadow with the same intensity ... Aparently the editor forgot to adjust the opacity there...

More like take off, hover, and landing.
