E4OD vs 4R100 | Differences Between Ford Transmissions

Curt shows the differences between the E4OD and the 4R100 monster transmissions. The earlier generation was produced from 1990 to 1997 was considered an E4OD. The identifying the factors to look for would be: A tag with code numbers on it and speed sensor location. The later unit known as a 4R100 was produced in 1998 and was phased out by Ford by 2003. The 4R100 has different speed sensor locations (mainly on the top of the unit).

All I have learned about E40D transmittions in the last week and the main thing I've learned is how expensive they are to have rebuilt, IF your rebuild guy can find parts...
I just need a good unit so my son will have his first truck. Looks like I'm going to the junk yard today...

How can you tell when either one goes bad? I have a 2001 expedition 4x4 but it will not change gears on its own. I'm having to let off the gas and then apply it again once the gears change. I'm just not sure which one is bad so i can swap it out. Thanks.
