Blitz Bowl: Ultimate Edition | Shelfside Review

Games Workshop has a new version of their fantasy football tabletop miniatures board game, Blitz Bowl! On a turn, your 3 actions will allow players to run, block, throw, and more with their favorite Skavens, Goblins, Orcs, Elves, you name it! Score victory points via touchdowns, or through hilarious challenge cards that encourage ridiculous strategies and gameplay hijinks! While there's dice rolling mayhem, there's also tons of opportunities to outplay your opponent through clever combos and careful positioning. However, this review does find some cons, like a particularly painful aspect about the minis, and maybe not so unique abilities for different factions.

Blitz bowl is the best boxed game Gw has made in the last decade.

Interesting I play the regular version of blood bowl and this looks like a quick fun alternative way to play

The amount of extra teams included cannot be overstated enough, it turns Blitz Bowl from a fun 2-faction game that is fairly repayable to a fantastic little box with an incredibly varied roster of teams. Even more so if you own season 1 or 2 as the extra boards also change up the positioning strategies. The Season 2 box included League rules too (rulebook should be available as a PDF) which me and my friends played through last year, 6 teams dishing it out over several matches. Pitting Humans, Orcs, Dwarves, Zombies, Beastmen and Elves together while laughing all the way through is one of the best gaming experiences I have ever had. Winner even got a trophy we made.

For a hobbyist, best thing to do with the humans is remove the crest from all the non blitzer players and the spikes off the linemen push daggers and claws. That makes them look different enough at a glance for sure

Great review of a fantastic game. First one to be posted. A couple minor rules explanation errors around end-game criteria, but overall concise and fair. Keep in mind, these games are designed as introductions to GW style tabletop games, which means some of the complexity (variety of skills) need to be limited.

Nice to see this get an outing. I've been playing Blood Bowl proper for about 30 years and it is super deep and strategic, but retains those moments of excitement and wackiness when the dice rolls go wild. Games Workshop's best ever game, and one of the best miniatures games ever.

The mechanics of Blitz Bowl actually derive from Dreadball, a non-GW game by Mantic Games, which was written by the same game designer.

Daniel - the 4 player version you are looking for is called Koasball by Eric Lang. More crazy and more players.

Bloodbowl: Team Manager is also pretty good imo ! Maybe not the best deckbuilding deck, but it was very enjoyable.

This game looks really fun, we also have some of these small boxed games in the UK, but for some reason we don't have blitz bowl.

I'd prefer to play a tighter, more focused version that standard blood bowl.

Maybe one day I'll get to try it!

We prefer Blitz Bowl to Blood Bowl, but Slaughterball beats them both––if you can find a copy. Highly recommended!

That was a cool review of a classic (well, a version of the classic)! Nice to see some games are so timeless. And bravo to GW for sending their stuff to reviewers. A bold move, considering their kind of outdated design philisophy.

The only thing I would recommend is - paint the models! Showing a GW game with unpainted models is a bit like showcasing a PlayStation 5 game on a 13" monochrome screen from early 90's ;)
