00:00 Hawaiian Shirt Introduction

These shirts have been around for close to a century now, yet can be a fiercely debated topic among enthusiasts as to whether they’re “stylish” or not. We’ll be discussing the history of the Hawaiian shirt, how it’s worn in a modern context, and if you can leverage classic style principles to include one (or more) in your wardrobe.

01:08 What is a Hawaiian Shirt?

On the Hawaiian Islands and elsewhere, you’ll sometimes hear them referred to as “Aloha Shirts”. The shirt is collared, usually with a camp style, and with a fully buttoned front though some variations might opt for a popover style instead. These shirts are almost always short-sleeved to mirror their casual, warm weather.

03:23 History of Hawaiian Shirts

Hawaiian shirts do actually originate from Hawaii. This style of shirt, alongside the checked style known as the palaka that originated on Hawaiian plantations, became popular in Hawaii as a trend.

07:50 Why You Should Wear a Hawaiian Shirt

• A classic option for the right personality
• Served as staples for many style icons and other notable figures
• Allow us to be extremely expressive with our color choices and patterns
• Much more “friendly” and “fun” when compared to other “stuffy” classic menswear options
• Especially nice for those who live in tropical or hot climates
• Signature style piece when done tastefully
• Having one will have you covered for Hawaiian-themed parties

10:02 Why You Should Not Wear a Hawaiian Shirt

• Hawaiian shirts are very situational
• They tend to be loud and extremely memorable
• Other casual shirts can serve just as well as a Hawaiian shirt
• Wearing a Hawaiian shirt outside of a resort setting will also carry some potential stigmas
• Some also might just consider the shirt “ugly”
• Quality Hawaiian shirts are more difficult to find
• They, unfortunately, carry some political baggage

13:55 How to Integrate a Hawaiian Shirt into a Classically Styled Wardrobe: 1. Observe the Occasion
2. Focus on Fit
3. Mind the Materials
4. Evaluate Your Ensemble
5. Balance Relaxation and Refinement
6. Remember Respect

18:20 Conclusion

Hawaiian shirts occupy a truly unique place within the world of classic menswear. There are certainly alternatives available (like polos and sport shirts) for those who don’t wish to own one, but they can be a fun inclusion into your wardrobe if they appeal to you.

There's nothing better than hosting a barbeque and being the grill master wearing a Hawaiian shirt.... You will never change my mind.

i inherited a deceased familiar wardrobe, he was a vet that went to korea, so he was stopping regularly on Hawaii, bought a literal fuckton of beautiful Hawaiian shirts, and when he passed my aunt told me that i could keep them all. I literally wear hawaiian shirts daily (unless it's winter).

Hawaiian shirts are daily business attire here in Hawaii! You'll look out of place without one!

I work in IT, and my "uniform" at the office includes a Hawaiian shirt over neutral cargo pants and work boots, with a Fedora for going outdoors. I live in Florida where there are fewer than a score of days per year that require long sleeves.
Compared to colleagues in polo shirts, I am likely to be picked out by new people as the manager in a given room, just because I'm wearing a button down shirt with a collar.
I gave away my short sleeve solids, stripes, and plaids so I'm down to 90% Hawaiian shirts, with a few dress shirts and long sleeves for our few weeks of "winter".

I pretty much wear a Hawaiian type shirt daily. I live at the beach, and live a rather Bond/Magnum sartorial lifestyle. Some really nice Sperry's, nice chinos, and a high end (Paradise Found) shirt with a nice Panama and I am good to go. When not wearing a Hawaiian, then a nice linen button down or a classic polo. Obviously, when wearing more formal attire the Hawaiian stays in the closet. What is funny is I have been wearing them for years. They seem to be coming back in style though. You're talking to a guy who wears Bass penny loafers too though!

Spent much time in Hawai'i back in the late 80's. Bought more than a few suitcases full of really nice designs, and I still fit into most of them. I worked in the IT department of a large bank (in conservative New England), and wore a Hawaiian shirt every day. Eventually Corporate banned me from walking through the lobby and main offices during the day and banished me to the Ops center. Loved it! Glad the shirts are seeing some more respect these days.

High contrast patterned shortsleeve buttonups are just nice to have and use in summer months. Floral patterns aside its simply nice to use.

As a certified Florida man; a good linen spread collar shirt with flowers, pineapples, or stripes is akin to Superman and his cape. But you guys nailed it, the biggest difference between looking like a tourist and looking beach ready is in the fit, color, and how the shirt is worn.

I have a collection of around 100 vintage to modern Hawaiian shirts from the 50's to modern, I would say get then from Hawaii or maybe Japan, RJC, Sun surf, Paradise found etc, also personally I think Rayon is one of the best fabrics for the shirts, not only is it very traditional but it seems to just fit better and flow better when you are wearing it.

I've been wearing Hawaiian shirts since 1986. I'm 55 and have 8 Hawaiian shirts now. I wear them mostly on vacation, cookout, and just hanging out at home on weekends during the summer.

My experience may be very different, but while working in a rather laid-back warehouse I've actually gotten a compliment on one of my Hawaiian shirts. I usually get mine from thrift stores and pick ones with much more subtle colors, such as my ivory + dull green Tabasco shirt.

I'm 16. Wearing a hawaian shirt I'd be considered well dressed.

Yes! I have around 20 Hawai'i-made aloha shirts. For me they are part of my 1950s style.

Live in Northeastern Oklahoma during the summer. When it is 95 degrees with the 65% humidity, they rock.

Rodd & Gunn has nice Hawaiian style shirts that are Hawaii office appropriate (not the tourist style Hawaiian shirt à la Nick Nolte booking photo). They can be found at Nordstrom (fewer & more subdued colors, smaller patterns). I wear their linen ones on island (even under a linen or giro inglese sport weave coat…). The ones you showed are more like tourist style ones.

I grew in South Florida during the 50s and 60s where I would lived most of my life. In the 1980s and 90s they were a regular part of my casual attire. At one point the girl I was living with bought us matching Hawaiian shirts, which I thought was too cute by two.

I have half a dozen Hawaiian shirts in my wardrobe in various prints and fabrics. That and shorts are the staple casual look for older gentlemen here in Central Florida where the summer temperatures are regularly in the mid-to-upper 90s.

Hawaiian shirts work great for helping not to "print" with concealed carry!
