A 17 year old boy died in my community from a brain injury caused in a football game by a tackle. He was a senior in high school, on his way to college. SEVENTEEN.. So young

wanting to play (usa) football, is the first sign of brain damage.

As a Veteran, I've seen the devastating effects of traumatic brain injury. I was never assigned to fight on the ground, but I have friends who were. It's a horrible affliction and it destroys lives. I will never watch a football game or support the sport for that reason. There's just no reason to put young people through this for just a damn sport.

Outlaw it for children immediately until they are 18 years old and can legally understand and consent to the risks.

I'm 45...played football from 5 yo to 17 yo. 4 high-school State champions...a lot of guys went to play college and a few Pro...BIG guys on team.
I have headaches everyday almost. I have a hard time controlling my temper. I had back surgery when I was 36 yo. Neurosurgeon said I had the spine of a 70 yo man...he said it was probably directly related to football and intense weight lifting.
so, NO. I did not let my son play football...against entire family's wishes
OF COURSE! as the brown buffalo says....when I used to listen to him

I'm not convinced QB is the safest position for your kid who you probably love, Louis.

Many activities put you at risk for injury. I watched a kid in High school get a compound leg fracture during football practice, bone sticking out and all. That wasn't half as bad as seeing a kid ski into a pole and watching his head explode on contact, a few years later.
My point is, we like to do dangerous stuff, risk be damned.

And schools wondered why I REFUSED to play football. Even under threat of suspension. Gee, I wonder, myself.

I would never let my kid play football. Are you serious? Hey, if you want to let your kid play, it's your decision.

Football is dangerous. If you want to play it, you accept the risks.

Now I've got a feeling that Futurama wasn't too far off with the concept of robots replacing humans in sports altogether. It's the inevitable conclusion of less and less willingness to risk sacrificing our childrens futures to let them play a game.

what a great topic for a senior exit project 😃

Interestingly the US Army is a major reason why US football is popular, they pushed it hard at the start- think about all the terminology used, blitz, bomb, neutral zone, formation, trench. It cultivates aspects into our society like tribalism, selflessness for the team, rhetoric used to make new soldiers in the future. Mind control does not have to effect many people to be effective- same principle as how casinos operate.

Kicker or quarter back? Yes, a kicker is a safe position, but a quarter back is not at all. My brother has had six concussions in his entire football career and he is a quarter back. Have you ever heard of sacking?

I've seen anecdotes from football teams that practice without protective gear, forcing them to develop techniques that prevent themselves from getting head injuries. Tackles using the shoulder going after the waist and legs are how rugby players tackle, and this team reported using more rugby like moves.

Are their any studies suggesting that helmets enhance the risk of concussions? I played football in High School but I never understood how a hunk of plastic would help against coup contrecoup.

One concussion alone can be enough to trigger CTE, which should be reason enough for review of the rules and protocols for football. CTE is a form of dementia and not (for me, anyway) worth the risk of playing in the first place.

How can you watch football if you wouldn't let your child play?

never liked heading a soccer ball either, avoided that as much as possible and part of the reason why i didn't play college soccer though I had the talent. you are your memories and nothing is worth risking that.

I would tell my kid I would think about it. Then make a presentation about how it can give you CTS. Then show my kid and let he or she decide. Then put them in a computer class lol
