Jeff Hardy won a match in May 2009 for a chance to face Edge for the world title. Later that night, Jeff attacked Edge and hit him with a swanton bomb. They met at Judgment Day. Edge hit Jeff with an amazing spear. Jeff used the steel steps to jump on Edge and then Matt attacked Jeff. Inside the ring, Edge hit Jeff with an Edgecution from the top rope to pin him and retain the title. On Smackdown, Jeff was granted a rematch by Teddy Long. Jeff came out, challenged Edge to a match and the winner chooses the type of match, he hyped the crowd up and Teddy accepted the idea. At the end, Jeff hit Edge with a swanton bomb to win the match and then chose a ladder match. Two weeks later on The Cutting Edge, Jeff got hit in the head and Edge pushed him off the ladder. Later that night, Jeff hit Edge with a twist of fate and then with a legdrop. They met at Extreme Rules. Jeff dodged Edge’s spear and hit him. Edge caught Jeff in the sharpshooter. Jeff hit a dropkick, then threw Edge into the ladder. Jeff hit a whisper in the wind. They were on a ladder and both fell onto another ladder. Jeff caught Edge with a twist of fate, then he trapped Edge to grab the title and to become the new champion. Then CM Punk cashed in his money in the bank to become the new champion.
