Hungry Ghost Festival Month Do's and Don'ts

The Hungry Ghost Festival falls on the 7th month of the Chinese calendar every year.

It is an ancient Chinese tradition to burn offerings to the departed loved ones and there are many do’s and don’ts to follow during the month. Better be safe than sorry!

I’m from Japan and live in Singapore now. I saw unfamiliar foods and fire by the street. Now I learn what was that.

When I asked those burning 'things'/putting food/pray/jogsticks and related as to why they doing, their answer will be for the hungry ghost/hungry spirit/spirit out from hell/somewhere.
Then I ask the following questions?
1. Who do they pray TO? (When we pray, we pray to something or someone)
2. Do you think with 100% that those spirits is hungry ghost?

3. When we burn incense to an idol eg. if we put a idol of kwan kuan look or ancester plate or others idols, means we are praying to that spirit? Yes, they say. When I ask again - you sure 100%? Answer becomes I just follow others/probably/ i don really know (If I put a mickey mouse and I burn jogstick, am i praying to a mickey mouse? If the logic are whatever idol I put there, that the thing I pray to?)

In conclusion, all the three(3) questions I asked above(actually there are more than these) the answer I get are:
1. follow other people
2. most likely
3. should be or I dont know

100% of people doing things based on maybe / i dont know and yet they are burning incense to the spirit

What if I tell you, those are the evil spirit and whoever burned to them is worshipping them without you even knowing. We create our own thinking who we praying to. (Remember my micky mouse analogy)

What I am saying is when we want to believe in something of faith, we need to think critically and ask lots of questions to answer . If not, you will end up worshiping the evil spirit unknowingly and you & your family can be destroyed in various way by evil spirit and eternity
