A joik is a traditional form of song of the Sami people of the Nordic countries and Kola peninsula of Russia. Originally, joik referred to only one of several Sami singing styles, but in English the word is often used to refer to all types of traditional Sami singing. As an art form, each joik is meant to reflect or evoke a person, animal, or place. This Joik was created to evoke Mathis Goup and was first created by Aslak Bals and Inga Kemi in 1956. Here it is performed by five members of the Calling All Choir during the finale concert of the Fall 2017 season in the Basilica of the Mission Dolores in San Francisco on January 27, 2018.
