2, 000 Children Separated from Parents at U.S. Border

On Friday, the Department of Homeland Security said almost 2, 000 children have been separated from their families at the U.S. border from April 19 to May 31, a six-week period.

This is a result of the Trump administration’s zero tolerance policy against people entering the U.S. illegally, with all adults, including parents, referred to criminal prosecution. So when they are detained, children are placed in a temporary shelter or placed with a foster family.

Media showed images of children in large warehouses locked in large metal chain fences at immigration centers in south Texas. Officials said they are there for 12 to 36 hours before being moved to other shelters.

Parents get a pamphlet telling them that as they go through their case, they can contact the ICE by phone or email to find where the kids are and to make arrangements to stay in touch with the children while they are in custody.

President Trump tweeted several times blaming Democrats for being weak and ineffective with border security, and pointed to crime from illegal immigration. There is increasing pressure on his administration from many lawmakers, including Republicans, for him to stop this zero tolerance policy.

Senator Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska) tried to explain the “big picture” — he said the old policy was “catch-and-release, ” a scenario where people caught crossing the border illegally were released in the U.S. with a future court date if they claimed asylum. But many never showed up for their court date. So this created a pathway for illegal immigration.

He said there are other ways to fix this problem instead of implementing this wicked policy of child separation.

FIFA World Cup Kicks Off in Russia

The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off last Thursday in Russia with 32 international teams playing in 12 different stadiums across the country.

The teams are divided into eight groups, A-H, with four country teams playing in each. They will play against each other once, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the “Round of 16, ” a knockout tournament starting on June 30.

The championship match will be on July 15.

The cost of the tournament is over $14.2 billion, which is the most expensive World Cup ever, and is the first to be hosted in Eastern Europe.

The defending champions (from four years ago) is Germany, who lost to Mexico yesterday 0-1.

Mexican fans were so excited when the team scored a goal that it caused earthquake sensors in Mexico City to detect tremors. They will play against South Korea this Saturday.

Another highlight is Portugal’s star player Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat trick, when he scored three goals in a tie with Spain on Friday. Lots of exciting things going on.

The U.S. failed to qualify for this tournament, which is the first time in the past 30 years. No U.S. presence there.

In related news, the 2026 World Cup will be hosted in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. 60 of the matches will be in the U.S., with 10 each in Mexico and Canada.

The next World Cup in 2022 will be in Qatar.

Virginia Officials Warn About Sightings of Giant Hogweed

People in southeastern Virginia, near Norfolk, are concerned and warning about sightings of a plant, the Giant Hogweed, which is an invasive plant from Asia. It is dangerous because it has sap that can cause third-degree burns on your skin and blindness if it gets in your eyes.

They can grow up to 14 feet tall when it blooms, it has white flowers in an “umbrella” shape.

The plant has clear, watery sap that, if it gets on your skin, can cause it to become sensitive to sunlight and cause severe burns, with this lasting many years.

There have been sightings of the hogweed in other areas in Virginia. If you see it, you should take photos and report it to Virginia officials on a website.

The plant should be pulled up using protective clothing or destroyed with herbicides, not with a weed whacker or chop it down as it can cause the sap to splatter.

So watch out for that hogweed.

Audi CEO Arrested in Germany

Audi’s CEO Rupert Stadler was arrested in Germany during the investigation on the Volkswagen (VW) emissions scandal. Audi is a subsidiary of VW.

Prosecutors in Munich said they detained him because they were concerned he would interfere with the investigation.

Stadler is the highest-ranking VW executive to be arrested in this investigation that started in 2015 when it was found that 240, 000 diesel cars sold in the U.S. and Europe were programmed to fool emissions testings.

There are 20 other current or former Audi employees who are suspected of fraud. In the U.S., two former VW executives have been sentenced to prison, with 9 others charged.

Audi is now in talks to find an interim boss.

Yorkshire Terrier Helps Rescuers Find Missing 3-Year Old Girl

In Qulin, Missouri, there was a 3-year old girl who was missing in a cornfield overnight, and was found safe the next morning when searchers heard the family’s Yorkshire terrier dog barking.

What happened? The girl, Remy, disappeared on Thursday night with the dog, named Fat Heath. When the family couldn’t find her, about 150 volunteers, a police helicopter, and first responders combed through the cornfield that night, but couldn’t find her and stopped the search.

The search started again the next morning (Friday) at dawn. One of the search teams had a dog, who barked, which caused the Yorkie, Fat Heath, to bark back weakly.

Searchers found the girl and the dog, who were okay except for mosquito bites and dehydration. Wow, it is nice that a dog helped another dog to save the girl.

Arizona Man Arrested For Making Fraudulent Returns at Over 1, 000 Wal-Mart Stores

An Arizona man was arrested for making fraudulent returns of computers to over 1, 000 Wal-Mart stores in the U.S. where he would buy them, take parts out of it, and return it.

The man’s name is Thomas Frudaker, 23. His scheme went on for the past 18 months. He was charged with fraud and theft.

Wal-Mart said they lost $1.3 million because of this.

People on the internet said he probably sold the computer parts.
