2016-2022 Toyota Tacoma Factory Tonneau Cover Review: Pros And Cons. Is It Worth It?

Pros:
1. Protects against theft with items stored in the bed
2. Protects your bed itself from the elements
3. Aerodynamic, saves on mpg
4. Adds weight in the bed during the winter months
5. Adds to the value of the overall truck

Cons:
1. The Price, MSRP 899.99 & second hand its ~$500.00
2. Does not fold all the way up against the window

Overall Thoughts:
Get one, it’s a no brainer unless you’d rather own a canopy cover. Remove it within 10 seconds and put it back on to protect your stuff.

This factory tonneau is available from Toyota (But not in the US). You can purchase the entire kit (tonneau, rails, hardware) from a Toyota dealer in Canada and have it shipped to the US. It arrives on a pallet and is shipped via LTL freight. Mine arrived in about 10 days. I used Sherwood Park Toyota in Alberta.

Agreed, the OEM cover is well worth it. ONLY problem is it really fades to a green moldy look after 3-4 years, and you can use Aerospace 303, to darken it, BUT really bad fade and has to be recoated every 3-4 months. On some of the forums its very common, seems like the UV breaks down the plastic.

Notice the driver side edge on first and second folds are just a tad higher...I figured out the locks on the cover actually have 2 locking positions..once you close it the lock..If you push down where the raised squares are on the cover they will click again and lock.
down tighter this has eliminated the gap across the tailgate that allowed you to get your fingers under the cover and access the release handles with the tailgate up.

My OEM tonneau started to deteriorate and leak after 5 years. I’m thinking about replacing it with a fiberglass canopy, which in hindsight I should have bought in first place.

Is Toyota the actual manufacturer of these? I was thinking they might be made by a different manufacturer for Toyota but i cant find that info. Looking to see if i can find one that works the same way as the OEM tacoma tonneau for a different truck

I have that on my truck my biggest issue with it its not very water tight plus I have to redo the top because of fading for 640.00 from the factory over priced and hopefully I never have to replace the rubber seals on the top

I was at the grocery store and someone hit the top of my husband’s on the edge and busted it on the middle panel. You have to replace the entire thing.

Did you have to get new molding on the sides of the bed as well for where the brackets attach to the bed?

Where would I be able to go to get the mounts for that specific cover? The bolt that's supposed to hold it down in the back passenger corner busted from the previous owner.
