In this Funder-to-Funder Conversation, co-sponsored by Overdeck Family Foundation, CGLR’s Sarah Torian engages philanthropic leaders and early learning professional development providers in a conversation exploring how research-based professional development can promote positive learning environments that support both children’s kindergarten readiness and teacher retention. Dana Cilono of Kenneth Rainin Foundation, Stephanie Sharp of Overdeck Family Foundation and Lis Stevens of Bezos Family Foundation open the session by discussing their respective foundation’s investments in early learning and kindergarten readiness, noting the misalignment that currently exists between what the science tells us about how young children learn and much of the policy, practice and investments in the early years. They call on funders to focus on quality – through research-based professional development and other strategies – as they work to rebuild the child care sector in the wake of the pandemic. They also stress the importance of boosting educator compensation. Afterwards, a panel of providers – Emily Grunt of FluentSeeds, Kai-ama Hamer of ParentCorps, and Deborah Leong, Ph.D. of Tools of the Mind – introduce and discuss their research-based professional development models.
