There are all kinds of fixatives and brands of fixatives out there to choose from! Fixatives for drawings, paintings, pastels, charcoal/graphite, workable and permanent, Krylon, Sennelier, Lascaux, Grumbacher, Blick, Spectra, and on and on... it can be really confusing!

In this video, I test out workable and permanent fixative - and demonstrate surprising results in both graphite and vine charcoal!

The two I test out for you are my old stand by,
Krylon Workable Fixative
and one specifically formulated for graphite/charcoal I've been wanting to try,
Sennelier Delacroix Fixative (Permanent)

I have used both for decades. workable does a great job between layers of graphite, charcoal and pastel especially when the paper/board surface does not accept any more. Then after I have finished I add a final coat of workable allowing it to set and dry well followed by the permanent. And as and added protection to UV I add a mate varnish to my portrait drawings.

AMOR, Thank you so much for sharing your own experience. I was wondering which brand was cheaper and better

Thank you for sharing this! I just got home from the art supply store and picked up some workable fixatif to use on my project, not knowing final fixatif exists. Sounds like it might just be marketing and I can just use workable fixatif as final if I wanted to. It seems a little silly for me to buy another can of earth polluting chemicals that I don't need. I'll spray my project down and see how it ages! :)

Well I worked for around 200 hours on a tiger in colour pencils. to get the whiskers in I used krylon workable fixative and it’s totally destroyed my drawing. All that work gone. I will never use krylon again. I couldn’t stop it flaking off and taking the colour from under it with it. I only used very light pressure but nothing could stop it flaking off. I’m glad I’ve found out now how bad this fixative is.

Da Crafs'man did a comparison between sealers...but he was using brush and pour on. Modge Podge won with no darkening. Another world, I guess...

Hello! I'm wondering what's the best fixative to use if you wanna go over waterproof India ink, so you can add watercolor?

While I appreciate the video comparison, it’s a bit annoying that you don’t remember if you sprayed fixative on the entire example sheet of paper….when that sheet is supposed to show the comparison lol
