How to Create Page Numbers in InDesign (i, ii, 1, 2, 3)

To create "Page x of y" on each page, do the following…

Go to the A-Master (A-Parent) within the Pages panel

Drag out a text box

Type the text "Page "

Menu - Type - Insert Special Character - Markers - Current Page Number

Type the text " of "

Menu - Type - Text Variables - Insert Variable - Last Page Number

Great one! My file however on the 1st page just says 1of1. All other pages work as should, but 1st will not.

Hi, Michael, great videos! I'm trying to find out how to insert the number of spread pages only in one, like "1 | 2" only in page 2... Do you know how can I do it?

As of InDesign 2022, Master Pages are now known as Parent Pages.

This last page variable does not work properly when your document has sections markers. In this case, it only considers the total pages of the section instead of the whole document. VERY ANNOYING.
